About this event

The theme for the next SPLN event is Managing Change. It will have a similar format to recent SPLN meetings and will have an opening talk by Graham Donaldson who will draw on his recent work in Wales and for Scotland’s International Council of Educational Advisors, including the possible impacts of Artificial Intelligence on education. There will also be a series of short presentations from headteachers and others about how they are managing change in their own settings. Participants will once again be able to share information through a Padlet as well as through the chat and during Q&A sessions during the meeting.

Pre-tasks

Please complete this Padlet SPLN 31/01/24 (padlet.com) with details of CLPL and networking which supports early career teachers which you would like to share with others. This Padlet will be open for contributions and comments throughout the meeting. You will also be able to contribute during the meeting through the meeting chat and in open contributions and comment session. We are looking to gather and share examples of good practice and increase awareness of the wide range of CLPL and networking opportunities available for teachers

10:00 Welcome and Introductions: Stuart Farmer and Jayne Rowe (Co-chairs)

10:05 Delivering change that will have impact on children and young people Graham Donaldson, University of Glasgow Graham will draw on his recent work in Wales and for Scotland’s International Council of Educational Advisors, including the possible impacts of Artificial Intelligence on education.

10:35 A Taster Menu of examples of managing change is different settings. Short presentations from a range of individuals and organisations.

1: Leadership of Change – It’s only just begun…

Angela Robertson, Headteacher, Queen Anne High School, Fife A story of bravery based on having undertaken a situational analysis and the recognition that a change in direction was required to ensure the best outcomes for young people. Creating a culture of true collaboration to drive school improvement with all staff involved in the process and journey.

2: All Learners All Achieving

Andrea Reid, Senior Education Officer, Glasgow City Council Bringing a renewed and coherent approach to Education Services through a refreshed purpose, vision, values and priorities. Getting the enabling environment right for leadership from the middle, developing a networked learning system clearly focused on the pedagogical core.

3: Curriculum Content Creation in North Lanarkshire Council

Jacqueline Burton, Education and Families’ Manager, North Lanarkshire At this pivotal time in Scottish education establishments must critically evaluate their curriculum offer and respond to the challenge to refresh Curriculum for Excellence. The policy direction for Scotland’s curriculum is at somewhat of a turning point, offering a once in a lifetime opportunity to contribute to what may turn out to be sweeping change. It is necessary to include the voices of all stakeholders and to work together with the profession to build the future we wish to see. This will be achieved through collaborative thinking and activities, through consultation, building capacity and confidence and empowering leaders at all levels. North Lanarkshire have a focus on developing this support for all schools in the authority to facilitate system learning, and ultimately curriculum content creation.

4: Leadership of Change – From Satisfactory to Very Good

Emma Clunie, Headteacher, Kirkcaldy North Primary School, Fife A story about a journey of strategic leadership, built on a culture of high standards, high expectations and ownership for all. Exploring why management is just as important as leadership in driving change; and a discussion around the importance of implementing rigorous systems and processes, and the impact of this on outcomes for children.
