N5 – Non-Fiction Friday

Here are the rules for Non-Fiction Friday:

1. Each week a different student brings in an article they are interested in and believes will be a good spark for class discussion.

2. On Tuesday, the student and I have a quick discussion about the questions they will pose to the class.

3. On Wednesday, we pass out the article to the rest of the class.

4. All students have until Friday to read, annotate and respond to the article in a mini-essay – approx. 200 words.

5. Everyone comes in on Friday ready to talk. Your essays are your notes of points you want to make.

6. The student who chose the article moderates the discussion.

7. After the discussion, the student who gets to choose next week’s article is selected.

N5 – Non-Fiction Friday: How to Find Good Articles

For Non-Fiction Friday you should choose something which interests you – you’ll be reading anyway about hobbies, sports, issues, celebrities, music etc. Choose something you’ve already thought about!

Kelly Gallagher is a teacher in America who keeps an archive of the articles his students study: you might find some of these useful for getting an idea of the sort of thing we’re after… If you’re really stuck, there might be one there which interests you? There’s years and years of stuff in the archive!

Subjects can range from: University admissions process, Internet and mobile-phone privacy, space exploration, paying sports-people too much (or not enough), feminism, civil rights, politics, sailing, exploration, travelling, food etc… As you can imagine, often the best conversations are the toughest ones!
