In line with Staged Intervention, it is expected that almost all children with additional support needs will have their needs met within their early years establishment through inclusive learning environments, high-quality teaching and learning practices, and nurturing approaches.
In some cases, it may be necessary to work collaboratively with other agencies to fully support a child’s needs (Stage 3). These may be education services, such as Educational Psychology or Early Years Support Service, or partner agencies such as Speech and Language Therapy. These services can work with establishments to support assessment and planning for additional support needs. Working with partner agencies.
For the very small number of children who have needs that require support at Stage 4, Glasgow has three specialist nursery provisions for children with very severe and complex difficulties. Children can attend this provision alongside their mainstream establishment if this is appropriate. Glasgow also has alternative primary school provision for children whose needs can not be effectively met within mainstream provision (Stage 4). Applications for alternative provision are managed by the Area Inclusion Group (AIG). The AIG can also offer peer support / solution focused discussion with headteacher rep from AIG, support with parent meeting, support with a team around the child meeting, advice and support to class staff from outreach service, support to plan a bespoke pathway and specific support from specialist provision
GCC establishments can find all the information needed to apply to the AIG on the GoGlasgow page (first link below). For those that can’t access GoGlasgow, all the same information and downloads are also shown below. Effective transition planning for children begins early, and for children with additional support needs discussions about transition should be taking place at the start of their preschool year. Applications to be considered for alternative provision should be submitted early in the child’s preschool year.
