In Galashiels Academy staff at LGBT Youth Scotland delivered assemblies for S5 and S6 pupils. As a result a group was set up for pupils to look at how they might challenge homophobia in their school. This group has had a real impact on their school including same sex-couples being encouraged to attend their S6 Christmas Dance and a Peer Education programme is due to begin in the next school term. To highlight their achievements two pupils delivered a presentation at the Developing Global Citizens Show Case Event in Stirling, organised by Education Scotland formerly Learning and Teaching Scotland. Education Scotland is delighted to be working in partnership on the PROFILES project, one of three selected for funding by the European Commission within the “Support Program 7 (FP7)”. How can this benefit learners and practitioners in sciences?
PROFILES is the acronym for “Professional Reflection-Oriented Focus on Inquiry-based Learning and Education through Science”.
Four central themes are the cornerstones of the PROFILES project: inquiring learning; reflective teaching; further professional training; collegial cooperation.
Education Scotland’s recently launched resource STEM Central provides an opportunity for secondary teachers to become involved in the PROFILES project with all the associated benefits of bringing research into the classroom, gaining valuable CPD and contributing to current educational researched. Our first School’s Channel broadcast is coming live from Braehead Primary School in West Dunbartonshire. Headteacher Joanne Paton contacted us through Glow and now her pupils will be taking centre stage on Glow TV for a National Event.
Join us as the candidates for the Braehead Primary Pupil Council for 2011-2012 will be rounding off their election campaigns with their own election broadcasts outlining why they should be elected to the Pupil Council.

A new resource produced by the Edinburgh Disasters Response Committee aims to support teachers who want to assist with charitable aid relief for the famine in the Horn of Africa. Development Officers for Sciences and Technologies, along with the team at ES, are working on a new context which will soon be added to the STEM Central resource. The Bioengineering context will feature learning journeys for sciences and technologies, based on third and fourth level E&Os, including learning, teaching and assessment ideas. Stop by STEM Central for quality assured resources, bringing relevant, engaging and exciting Scottish contexts into the classroom.
The Scottish Community Development Centre, has been awarded funding through the Grundtvig programme of the European Commission to take part in a network for community development with marginalised social groups. Other partners are the Hungarian Association for Community Development, Estrategies de Transformacio Comunitaria Sostenible (Barcelona) and the Association of Local Democracy Agencies, which is based in France and works in the Balkans and Caucasus. The aim of the project is to allow for mutual learning about innovative tools of community work to strengthen the capacity of the partnering organisation to combat poverty and support the social integration and citizen participation of excluded social groups.
This will result in a practical guide on community development with marginalised social groups as well as short films on the localities and projects visited through the programme.

The eight addition of the magazine of the Edinburgh Interfaith Association.
Education Scotland colleagues attended the Aberdeen Primary Science Summer School this week to meet primary practitioners eager to enhance their understanding of learning and teaching in sciences. This gave us a chance to link STEM Central contexts, videos and interactives to practical workshops, in partnership with Satrosphere, Dundee Science Centre and the University of Dundee. We also highlighted new Education Scotland resources to engage learners and support practitioners including Glow Sciences video resources and Weather & Climate Change. STEM Central is about enriching learning and teaching through relevant engineering contexts and about strengthening links with industry and employers, and partners in education, so we were delighted to be given the opportunity to participate in this event. Pupils from Bucksburn Academy engaged in a number of environmental project driven by senior students in liaison with a number of local agencies and organisations such as National Heritage Scotland and Aker Solutions. This inspirational initiative, part of a Comenius Regio Project linking with schools as far afield as Italy on the topic of sustainability, provided pupils with valuable experiences in improving their local environment by cultivation their school grounds, building bird and bat boxes and preparing access to a local woodland area. The involvement in this project gained students significant leadership skills as well John Muir awards. In a recent episode of the BBC Radio Scotland show, ‘Out of doors’, pupils from Perth Grammar and their Depute Headteacher, Michael Conlon, talk about achieving their second Eco Schools Green Flag and how this work links to the school motto: Pride, Respect, Ambition.

The Scottish Green Awards, created by Scottish Business Insider in association with Scottish Power, take place on Thursday 29 September 2011 at the Glasgow Science Centre.
The Scottish Green Awards will celebrate the achievements and initiatives of both corporate organisations and individuals who work to reduce carbon emissions.
The 2011 Award Categories are:

- Best Green Community Initiative;
- Best Green Campaigner/Activist;
- Best Young Person Campaigner/Activist;

I recently was invited to the Food for Thought Community Cafe at St. Nicholas Primary School in Broxburn, West Lothian.
Food for Thought is a Fair-Trade community café run by the pupils of St. Nicholas Primary School. At Food for Thought you can share a tea or coffee and some delicious home baking over a chat while learning more about Fair-Trade and how it helps countries in the developing world. You can also buy Fair-Trade goods and find out more about the pupil’s learning in school. From time to time they may provide entertainment or run workshops for you to get involved in. At Food For Thought their aim is to provide a happy atmosphere and a strong sense of community.
Food for Thought was dreamt up by the pupils while they were working on a block of learning about Global Citizenship. It is a Social Enterprise venture and profits will support their sister school in Ghana and local community groups supported by the St. Vincent de Paul.
