Committees and Events

Pupil Committees

In Bower we have various child led committees – a pupil council and digital leaders group, Polycrub and SNAG (school nutrition action group), Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) finally RRS – (Rights Respecting School).  Children are invited to volunteer for one of the committees and these meet monthly. They often make up competitions and arrange different events for their school mates and they share these ideas and initiatives with them during our fortnightly assemblies. We try to make links with our local community wherever we can. For example, our JRSO’s worked with Norscot to provide high-vis vests for all pupils.

Sporting Activities and Events

An annual sports day is held during the summer term to which our parents, friends and pre-school children are invited. Throughout the year there are many sporting events organised by the Active Schools Co-ordinator, Tina Gibson.

Coffee Mornings and Fundraising

We have a very welcoming community at Bower, and our fundraisers and coffee mornings are always well attended.  For a small school we have a big heart and support various charities such as Macmillan, Children in Need, Red Nose Day, Odd Socks for WDSD etc.

Swimming

Primary 1 -7 children attend swimming lessons at Thurso Swimming Pool for a 10 week block in Term 4. Swimming tuition is provided free but a charge has to be made for transport. The cost of transport to the pool is £2.50 per child but this may have to be reviewed if transport costs rise. If your child cannot swim, the pool has requested that you must provide armbands, which must be brought to school already inflated.

Caithness Music Festival

Every June, all schools in Caithness get the opportunity to take part in the Caithness Music Festival; this is held in Wick Assembly rooms. The festival includes the option to perform a dramatised song, choral verse, music making etc. In the past we have had assistance with the Feis Ros musicians who encourage the children to achieve a better knowledge of performing in front of an audience as well as learning a new skill. Individuals can also take part in; Performing Poem’s, Caithness Dialect or playing an instrument. For individual entries, this is done through parents taking their own children along to the Assembly Rooms.

At the end of the Summer Term the children enjoy putting on a short concert for parents and friends, performing the poems, songs and stories which they have practised and performed at the Caithness Music Festival. If you have any skills or hobbies which you feel would interest our children, please contact the Head teacher to discuss ideas for activities. For example, chess, gardening, football, sewing, drama, art and craft, music and spinning, etc.
