During this lecture I really got a feel for the overall module and started to reflect on how I can teach religious education in schools. As a Catholic myself, it is clear I have to remove myself from the point of view of a religious person and teach each religion as if I as an outsider. This will mean that no personal beliefs or biases will be shown.

I was taken a-back when learning about cult cultures, and especially the Jim Jones cult, and the tragic end that his thousands of followers came to.

One quote that really made me think and will probably resonate in my heart and my head for a long time is as follows;

Religion does not kill,
Religion does not make you miserable,
Culture does not kill,
Culture does not make you miserable,
They are supposed to make you whole.
If that does not happen –
Something is wrong.

Religion, Society and Diversity 1.

The first lecture of Society and Lifestyles really showed me that there is a lot more to society and religion than I know. Although the class was filled with a lot of new information, I was certainly kept engaged throughout. Throughout the day, I gained a lot of new knowledge. We discussed the meaning of religion … Continue reading Religion, Society and Diversity 1.

Today was the first class in the Society and Lifestyles module and it was focused on Religion, Society and Lifestyles. I really enjoyed the lecture and workshops and found them both very interesting and informative.  I had previously done RMPS in high school as a higher and so I did have some previous knowledge on the subject already.  However, my knowledge was greatly expanded from today’s lesson as it was aspects of religion and society that I had never looked at before.

From the lecture, I was able to grasp an understanding of what religion actually is and how so many people in different professions would define it. I found this very intriguing as I was unaware to how many definitions there were regarding religion and I certainly want to look a lot more into how religion can and is defined.  I feel like the definitions that I related to the most were the Sociologists and Anthropologists view.

From that, we also discussed how when we as students speak and learn about religion we are taking a scholarly approach opposed to a believers approach. This was something I had never really thought about before in detail but found very interesting when we were speaking and learning about it in the lecture. A part of the lecture that I feel that I will need to do a lot of further research into from religious studies or books is the theorists.  We were able to learn about different thoerists and how some of their views and findings supported religion.  We spoke about four of them in particular: Smart, Malinowski, Durkheim and Bourdillon. When it came to one of the workshops, we were to research one of the theorists in more detail which was very helpful as it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding. However, I do feel like I will need to research these theorists in a lot more detail so that I can gain a deeper understanding of their viewpoints.

I would also like to deeper my understanding on functionalism. I found that I got a bit confused at this section, however once I read over my notes I started to understanding it a bit better although I do think I will need to do further readings to fully understand this part.

I really enjoyed today’s lectures and workshops and felt like they were very engaging, interesting and eye-opening. I feel like this particular module will be very useful and helpful for my progress as a learner and a teacher.

From the lecture on Religion, Society and Diversity I learned that when studying religion in a social context it can be complex due to religion being a very complex aspect. We looked at the various ways in which certain people would describe ‘religion’ such as Anthropologists, Sociologists, Historians and Theologians which provided me with an insight into the many different … Continue reading Religion, Society and Diversity

Today’s class was certainly a head spinner, there was a lot of information thrown at us and a lot of (mental) questions asked.  One thing the class wasn’t however was boring, we covered the meaning and function of religion, the different types of religion, religious diversity and some of the theorists who covered the aspects of religion in their work.  I looked at one of these theorists, Bronislaw Malinowski, and his work on religion in more detail.  He was known as the founder of social anthropology and for many years he lived alongside and studied the Trobriand islanders.  Malinowski believed that religion serves particular needs of society and that it fulfils the biological and psychological needs of the human race.  After today’s classes I can see the relationship between religion and culture is much stronger than I first thought, it can bring people together in times of need and it can also give strength and individuality to a person.  I also now know that there are three types of religion, established religion, sect and cult.  Before today I was only aware of two of these types of religion, established and cult, so sect is a new concept for me and I think I will research more into it and cult as I am interested by what they mean.  Today’s class has given me more inspiration of how religion can be taught to children, there are so many ways in which you can explain to them the different types of religion and even how on a basic level they are a little similar.  I can understand that some parents/educators don’t like the idea of teaching children about religion as it is a choice for them to make whether they follow or believe in a religion.  However, I do think that teaching children about the different types of religion in the world they live in can have a very positive effect on them as it can open their minds and allow them to respect other people’s beliefs and views.  After all they do say that the greatest cause for conflict between religions is a lack of understanding of each other’s beliefs.
