Food For Thought at Biggar High School

22 January 2014: SBC Programme Coordinator Vivian Maeda was at Biggar High School in South Lanarkshire on Monday to facilitate a food packaging workshop in conjunction with ESC Packaging and Parkers Packaging. The workshop is part of the Scottish Government’s Food For Thought programme which aims to

improve food education in schools across Scotland by running a variety of engaging and creative projects. Scottish Business in the Community’s role in this programme is to help schools find volunteers from businesses to enhance pupils’ learning and experience.

At the workshop, Carri Walker (ESC Packaging) and Michelle Nugent (Parkers Packaging) explained to pupils what was involved in designing a new ready meal packaging for the local butcher ‘Damn Delicious’. After learning more from the experts in the field, the children will attempt to design their own packaging for the ready meal and will be assessed on a variety of criteria including creativity, feasibility and costs including production and marketing. The winners will be announced in mid-February 2014.

A hugely successful and stimulating event, Carri and Michelle also addressed the importance of understanding a client’s brief, the colour psychology used in targeting specific customers as well as issues of branding. Finally, the importance of including the nutritional value, weight, logos and dietary information warnings was addressed.

This is just one of many creative applications of Food for Thought within schools. Working with local businesses provides a practical and multidisciplinary angle to food education. From a school “bake-off” with professional chefs judging, to a school running its own Farmers’ Market with local businesses, to a mock “Dragons’ Den” within the school where managers and chefs from different companies judge the feasibility of a mock range of healthy snacks – the applications are diverse.

Yell Aquaculture – Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools

Burravoe and Cullivoe Primary Schools on Yell, Shetland, are just starting their joint project learning about the importance of fish in a healthy diet. Aquaculture is an important part of life on Yell and we are lucky to have several local businesses who are going to help us find out about fish and shellfish. We are planning to share what we learn with members of the community and are using ICT to share more widely. The two schools are 20 miles apart and whilst we have planned to share some visits we have also created a Glow Group for us to use for sharing resources and for virtual collaboration; we are learning about the new tools in Glow that will help us work together. We are using most of our funding to pay supply cover so that staff can have time to plan and reflect both together and with other partners and also for transport so that we can visit various industry sites around the island.

We are planning to use animation as one way to share learning. This is an animation made by a P1 who is learning how to animate.

Tulliallan Sustainability Event

On Friday 8th November 2013, the Primary 7 class from Tulliallan Primary hosted a Sustainability Event to which they invited all classes and also parents and carers.

The event was an opportunity for the children to share their learning about Climate Change and sustainability.  Prior to the event, Primary 7 spent lots of time in class learning about the causes and impact of climate change.  They also worked with Primary 5 to learn more about Food Miles, the impact these have on the environment and about local, in-season produce.  This work was then developed further with P7 carrying out Maths activities to investigate the food miles of various recipes, sharing their learning with Primary 3 and then buddying up with Primary 3 to bake using local produce.

The end result was a Café area that served the food created by P3 and P7 and a trade show in the Primary 7 classroom to highlight the benefits of reusing food packaging waste.

Watch our movie, Review of Learning, to find out more and to hear what we learned from this event!
