Much of the course content in Social Subjects can be found in everyday life. Parents/Carers can encourage their children to engage with news regularly and seek out different sources of information e.g. relevant TV programmes/ documentaries and books.

Learners will continue to use a wide range of skills and knowledge that will help prepare them for the Senior Phase.
Geography: Mix of physical, human and environmental issues.
History: The Atlantic slave trade- Triangular Slave Trade and Britain’s role in the Slave Trade. The Cold War- Themes and flashpoints.
Modern studies: The criminal justice system in Scotland and the UK.

What is in the National 4/5 course?
Historical Study: Scottish (The Era of the Great War- A study of Scotland’s role and experience of World War One.
Historical Study: British (The study of the Atlantic Slave Trade-The experience of slavery on the plantations, resistance and abolition of the slave trade)
Historical Study: European and World (The Cold War- Origins of the Conflict-Hungary, Berlin and Cuba, The Vietnam War and ‘superpower’ conflict and cooperation; and the USA and USSR.)

What’s in the Higher History course?
The course consists of three areas of study: British, European and world, and Scottish history. There is considerable flexibility in the contexts and themes which can be studied to allow for personalisation and choice.
Component 1:British
Britain, 1851–1951
Development of the United Kingdom into a modern democracy and the development of the role of the state in the welfare of its citizens. Themes: authority, ideology and rights.
Component 2: European and the World
Germany, 1815–1939
The growth of nationalism in 19th century Germany leading to the overcoming of obstacles to unification of the nation by 1871, and the development of extreme nationalism after 1918. Themes: nationalism, authority and conflict.

What is in the National 4/5 course?
Section 1: Democracy in the Scotland and the UK
The main institutions and organisations which make up political life and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities in contemporary democratic political society.
Section 2: Social Issues in the United Kingdom- Causes of crime, the impact of crime on individuals and society and the role of individuals, the police, the legal system and the state in tackling crime.
Section 3: International Issues
Learners study a major world power (USA) or a significant world issue (Underdevelopment in Africa).
The assignment is therefore worth 20% of the overall marks for the course assessment.
What’s in the Higher Modern Studies course?
Section 1: Democracy in Scotland and the United Kingdom
Study of the democratic political system in the UK including the place of Scotland within this system.
Section 2: Social issues in the United Kingdom (social inequality OR crime and the law)
The impact of social inequality on any relevant group OR on relevant and contemporary aspects of crime, criminology and the law.
Section 3: International issues (World Power or World Issues)
The study of a world power focuses on political and socio-economic issues. Learners will focus on a major world power from any members of the G20 group of countries, including the EU, but excluding the UK.; or the study of a world issue focuses on any significant recent issue or conflict which extends beyond the boundaries of any single country.
