Naming CPDS
Elements in CPDS
SUMMARY
When naming compounds the name lists the elements in the compound.
As a general rule, metals come first, followed by non-metals.
Where the compound contains only those elements listed, the name ends IDE.

e.g the compound copper oxide contains the elements copper and oxygen only.
e.g the compound lithium hydroxide contains the elements lithium, hydrogen and oxygen only.
e.g the compound calcium chloride contains the elements calcium and chlorine only.

You should take care to name the element correctly, the element is chlorine NOT chloride!
You will find some compound names end ATE or ITE.
In these cases the compound contains the named elements plus oxygen.

e.g. the compound magnesium carbonate contains the elements lithium, carbon and oxygen
e.g. the compound calcium nitrate contains the elements calcium, nitrogen and oxygen
e.g. the compound sodium sulfite contains the elements sodium, sulfur and oxygen
