At King’s Park Secondary School we strive to ensure finances do not create barriers to learning or restrict opportunities for our young people. The Scottish Government has made the cost of the school day and closing the attainment gap key priorities in education and we take this responsibility seriously.
Breakfast Club
We are delighted to run a breakfast club in our school to ensure all young people have access to a healthy and nutritious meal to start the day. The club is open to all pupils and no prior sign up is required. The location is in our pupil support room on the ground floor in the main school building. Breakfast is available from 8:15am.
Fuel Zone
The catering facilities in King’s Park Secondary School are very good and are available on a cafeteria basis with facilities for snack/fast food and set meals.
The Fuel Zone operates a cashless system using parent pay.
Interval
At morning intervals you can purchase various hot and cold snacks from the Fuel Zone, or from the vending machines located in the dining area. Water is freely available to you at all times from the dispensers.
Lunchtime
If you are entitled to a free lunchtime meal your card will be automatically credited every day with an allowance equivalent to the cost of a main meal. You can use your free meal allowance at any time that day, to buy hot or cold snacks and drinks as an alternative to a main meal.
Applications for the free school meals programme can be obtained from the Grants Section at Education Services headquarters or from the school.
Fruit is free in the cafeteria to any young person who asks for it. A kind gesture from our staff to support our young people.
Free School Meals
All secondary schools are able to offer free school meals to young people in certain circumstances. To find out if your young person is eligible please do not hesitate to contact their pupil support teacher. More information can be found by following this link: https://www.mygov.scot/school-meals
Cost of the School Day
In addition to breakfast club and free school meals we offer a number of other financial supports to our young people. Pupils no longer have to contribute money towards any of their core subject studies. For example, in Home Economics young people used to pay £1 per dish for ingredients. Costs like this are now no longer applicable. Financial support is also available for school uniform and PE kit if required. Please contact pastoral care for support with this.
Period Poverty
The Scottish Government have made an investment to make sure essential products will be available to those who need them in a sensitive and dignified way. Free sanatory products are always available at the school office, the pastoral care base and in the female toilets.
Hot water bottles can be requested at the Pastoral Care base
Nurture Boxes
The school has developed nurture boxes for young people to access if they are in need as another means of support to young people who’s families may be struggling financially.
Pupil Equity Funding and Attainment Challenge
All departments in the school have the opportunity to bid for funding specifically earmarked to help close the attainment gap and ensure equity for all learners.
