In Home Economics we have a number of courses on offer for our young people. These include National 4, 5 and Higher Health and Food Technology, National 4 and 5 Practical Cookery and Personal Development.
Health and Food Technology
This qualification provides opportunities for pupils to study the relationships between health , nutrition, the functional properties of food, lifestyle choices and consumer issues. The course allows our pupils to develop an awareness of informed food and dietary choices that can have a positive effect on their health and enable our pupils to advise others. Our pupils are also given opportunities to develop a range of food preparation skills, techniques and processes. Our pupils are assessed in a variety of methods including formative and summative assessment techniques.
Practical Cookery
This qualification develops a wide range of cookery skills and processes as well as food preparation techniques. Our pupils learn how to plan and produce meals as well as presenting them appropriately. They also develop their knowledge and understanding of various ingredients from a variety of different sources as well as their uses. Our pupils also learn about the benefits of using local and seasonal ingredients with regards to responsible sourcing and sustainability. The pupils also develop their understanding of the impact that food choices have on Health and Wellbeing. Through application of practical skills our pupils also enhance their food safety and hygiene skills.
