Free School Meals

You may be eligible for Free School Meals if you have a child that attends a Glasgow school, and you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit (UC), and your monthly take home pay is £726 or less.
  • Income Support/Income based Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) or any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC), but not Working Tax Credit, with an annual income of less than £18,725
  • Both Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £8,717
  • Asylum Seeker receiving support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Clothing Grant

Families on low incomes may be eligible to receive a School Clothing Grant award of £120 for a Primary-aged child or £150 for a Secondary-aged child. The award is given annually to assist with the cost of purchasing essential school clothing for families who are on a qualifying benefit.

You may be eligible for a Clothing Grant if you have a child that attends a Glasgow school, and you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Housing Benefit / Council Tax Reduction (this is not Council Tax single person’s discount or student discount)
  • Universal Credit (UC), and your monthly take home pay is £726or less.
  • Income Support/Income based Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA) or any income related element of Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • Child Tax Credit (CTC), but not Working Tax Credit, with an annual income of less than £18,725
  • Both Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit with an annual income of less than £18,725
  • Asylum Seeker receiving support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999

Applying for Free School Meals and Clothing Grants

  1. Search for ‘Glasgow Free School Meals’ on Google and click the first hit, or follow this link directly to the FSM home page: Clothing Grants/Free School Meals – Glasgow City Council
  2. Select ‘Apply online’
  3. Log in with your mygovscot.org login details.
  4. You may be asked for consent to share your data with Glasgow City Council. Select ‘Yes’. This may mean that you need to return to the Free School Meals homepage and log in again.
  5. The next page will show you eligibility criteria and income thresholds for Free School Meals and Clothing Grants. Please ensure you meet these criteria before continuing.
  6. Proceed through the form answering all questions correctly. If you use translation software on your device, turn this off before filling in the form as it will translate your address and cause errors in the form.
  7. Be ready to provide your National Insurance number. If you are an asylum seeker and do not have a National Insurance number, write ‘asylum seeker’ in the box where your NI number is requested.
  8. Select your eligibility from the list and check the appropriate box
  9. Enter your child’s/children’s details
  10. On the final page, upload photographs or screenshots of your supporting document – for example, a statement from your most recent Universal Credit payment, including any and all deductions, or a statement from any other benefit which qualifies you for Free School Meals and matches the option you have chosen on the previous page. If possible, download your statement as a PDF to your device and upload it directly.
  11. Click on send form – this will enable you to check details, and once sent you will be given an application reference number which you should take a note of, and a timeframe for response.
  12. If you want to make changes to your form after submission, highlight any problems or enquire about a response, go back to the FSM homepage and click on ‘Enquiry Form’.
