Introduction to the Performing Arts Faculty
Welcome to the Performing Arts Faculty at King’s Park! Our vibrant faculty encompasses both the Drama and Music departments, offering students a rich and inclusive environment to explore their talents and passions and develop a wide range of Skills for Learning, Life and Work.
We are proud of our high levels of attainment and the strong sense of community we foster. Our dedicated team works to ensure that every student, regardless of background or ability, has the opportunity to shine. Through a wide range of extracurricular activities, including dynamic clubs, engaging excursions, and numerous performances throughout the year, we provide students with platforms to showcase their skills and develop their confidence.
Our programmes nurture transferable skills invaluable in all areas of life and future careers. Collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity are at the heart of our teaching. Students also build vital meta-skills such as resilience, adaptability, and self-management, equipping them for success in an ever-changing world.
S1-S3 BGE
Our Broad General Education (BGE) course in Performing Arts provides students in S1 to S3 with a wide-ranging and comprehensive introduction to the subjects within our faculty and prepares students effectively for the Senior Phase. In S1 pupils receive one period of Drama and a double period of Music per week and in S2 pupils receive a single period of Music per week and a double period of Drama. We develop skills such as creating, performing, analysing and evaluating across both subjects with a focus on Voice, Movement, Improvisation, Script Work, Stage Combat, Characterisation and Production Skills in Drama and in Music we focus on a diverse range of classroom instruments (voice, glockenspiel, keyboard, drumkit, guitar and bass guitar), Music Technology, Music Literacy and Listening.
The main goal of the S1-S2 curriculum is to give pupils a solid understanding of the subjects we provide, enabling them to make thoughtful decisions about their areas of focus at the end of S2. At this point, students can opt to continue in Music or Drama or both and we also offer Music Technology as a standalone subject at this point.
In S3, pupils move to a more bespoke curriculum and receive three periods a week in each of their chosen subjects. In the Performing Arts department we dedicate S3 to consolidating the key skills, knowledge and understanding from S1-2 while preparing students for National Qualifications by allowing pupils to begin to specialise in different elements of the subjects. By working towards performances and projects, pupils begin to understand what will be required of them in the Senior Phase while getting to make key decisions about the path their learning will take.
