Ibrox Primary School

Literacy

Literacy is the responsibility of all; therefore we commit to making the most of Literacy learning opportunities, including Literacy across Learning.

At Ibrox we encourage our pupils to;

engage with and create a broad range of texts, including Scottish and Scots texts, use reading and listening strategies to understand, analyse and evaluate texts; find and use information, develop critical literacy skills, including evaluating sources; write with increasing accuracy, making effective use of spelling, grammar and punctuation; create texts of increasing complexity using more sophisticated language and develop and use higher‐order thinking skills.

Our school is part of the Glasgow Improvement Challenge and we have focused on the following areas

2015-16 Phonological Awareness

2016-17 Reading Comprehension Strategies

2017-18 Developing an Equitable Literacy Curriculum (in partnership with Professor Sue Ellis and Strathclyde University

2018-19 Writing

2019-20 Listening and Talking, addressing the Vocabulary Gap

In session 2023-24 we introduced Read, Write, Inc across P1-P5. This is used to support children with their phonic development and reading skills. RWI is taught in groups which are formed after children are assessed. Children move to work in their RWI group on Mon, Tues, Thurs and Fridays between 10:50 and 11:45am. Children are assessed every 8 weeks by the Reading Leader, Mrs Chalmers, to ensure they are working at the correct level.

If you have any questions regarding your child’s Literacy work please contact Mrs Chalmers who will happy to  discuss matters.
