S1 The Developing World 

This unit aims to firstly introduce pupils to Modern Studies. It seeks to expand and broaden pupils knowledge and understanding of the world by comparing and contrasting the developed world to the developing world. Throughout this unit, pupils are asked to draw on their understanding of life in Scotland and explain how their daily life differs to those in a contrasting country. Pupils will also begin to develop enquiry skills during this unit.

S2 USA  

Pupils will explore a variety of issues and topics relating to the USA. An in depth study of social issues in the USA will be covered including education, health and crime. This unit also looks at and explores the political system in the United States. Pupils will carry out a research project on the topic of either gun laws or capital punishment. Furthermore, pupils will continue to build on their existing skills from S1 and develop debating, note-taking, and team working skills.

S2 Street Law

This unit introduces pupils the concept of law and the various different aspects of this.Throughout this course, as well as studying real life case studies, pupils will learn to evaluate different sources of evidence and come to conclusions.

S3 Crime and the Law 

This unit has been developed to help pupils acquire knowledge of crime and the law in Scotland and the UK through a variety of different tasks and activities. Pupils will study the current context of crime, causes of crime, consequences of crime, criminal justice systems and responses to crime. This unit also seeks to build on the skills that pupils have developed through previous Modern Studies units such as Conclusion and Selective in the Use of Facts Questions.

 

S3 If I Ran The Country

This unit seeks to broaden pupil’s knowledge and understanding of various political terminology. Whilst learning about different political systems and ideologies, pupils will be creating their own country and political system.

S3 Research Project

Pupils will be carrying out their own research for a project of their choice. This unit will help pupils gain invaluable research skills whilst making use of all of the skills they have previously learned such as evaluation and analysis.
