Nelson Mandela time capsule project

Last session, our P5 class were working on a special learning project inspired by Nelson Mandela. As part of this work, the children created a video of their digital artwork –  combining their own illustrations and voice recordings. They share what Nelson Mandela means to them, what life is like for them in 2026, and their hopes for the future.

We’re proud to let you know that this video will be placed in an official time capsule that will be buried at the statue site later this year, and that members of our class have also been invited to attend both the unveiling and the time‑capsule ceremonies.

To finish off our topic ‘When Mandela Danced in the Square’, P5 carefully created these detailed charcoal portraits of Nelson Mandela.

They even  included some collage shapes inspired by South African art to add extra decoration too.

This term our Rights Club has created an Advent Calendar to promote Children’s Rights. Behind each door in December is a video highlighting our favourite UNCRC Articles. Classes will take the chance to think about and discuss these important rights each day. Click on the link below to see it in action…..

Creating School and Class Charters

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is at the heart of our school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos. As a Gold rights-respecting school, we not only teach about children’s rights in the classroom but model rights respecting language and attitudes in all of our relationships.

Every year, each class creates an agreed ‘class charter’. These are in addition to our whole school charter and playground charter. Pupil participation and pupil voice informs the development of these agreed charters.

‘When Mandela danced in the Square’

In 2023, our P5-P7 classes took part in WOSDEC’s (West of Scotland Development Education Centre) ‘When Mandela danced in the Square‘ project. The project explored Scotland’s connection with Nelson Mandela and supported pupils to feel empowered to take action on issues of importance to them today.

Pupils explored the context of apartheid South Africa, the life of Nelson Mandela and the connections to the Scottish anti-apartheid movement. They used iPads to create short films and illustrations to share their thoughts and opinions on this important topic. All lessons were linked to related Sustainable Development Goals and articles from the UNCRC, to help build learners real world understanding of these.

‘Rights Info’ filming to promote Children’s Rights

We worked with ‘Rights Info’ who were making a video all about Human Rights for the Equality and Human Rights Commission. It explored Children’s Rights in a child friendly way and has been used across Glasgow and Scotland to support rights learning in schools. Rights Info even made us our very own Garnetbank Primary version which you can watch below….

Rights Club Animation 2023

Our Rights Club had fun using their digital skills to create these animations. The children chose a UNCRC Article which was important to them and explained why. We shared them at assembly and with our families to help spread the word about Children’s Rights – a great way to put Article 42 into action ‘All adults and children should know about the UNCRC.’
