BSL in our School

Mrs McEachran has been learning British Sign Language for nearly 5 years!  She loves to share her signing skills with the pupils and teachers and we are very proud to say that BSL is being taught across all of our classes. Mrs McEachran has also held a six week BSL Master Class for staff across the city. These classes were held in our school.

BSL Leaders

In 2017, we recruited six BSL Leaders from our Primary 7 class. They worked with Mrs McEachran on a weekly basis to learn new signs, plan activities and deliver BSL mini lessons to every class within our school. They asked their assigned classes what else they wanted to learn and would then plan and evaluate their inputs. They have helped Mrs McEachran deliver a BSL Master Class session to teachers all across the city, as well leading assemblies in signing! Our original team of BSL Leaders were even awarded the Language Ambassadors of the Year at the 2017 Glasgow Languages Awards! Our school’s work in BSL was recently featured in the Children in Scotland magazine!

Signing Choir

We have a well established school choir with children from Primary 5, 6 and 7. Since 2016, we have started to combine singing and signing. To do this we use Sign Supported English. SSE borrows signs from BSL and follows English grammatical structure. SSE is used to support spoken English. Our Choir has performed at many events across the city. They have opened the SALT 2017 Conference, performed at the EIS International Women’s Day Event, sang and signed at the SCILT Languages Event and this year they featured on the BBC ‘Timeline’ show!
