Free School Meal/Breakfast Club Grant and Clothing Grants

Dear Families,

As you may be aware some families are entitled to financial support in the form of free School Meal/Breakfast Club and Clothing grants. Free school meal support includes free access to breakfast club which runs in school, each day from 8-8.45am. The School Clothing Grant award of £120 for a Primary aged child or £150 for a Secondary aged child is available on an annual basis to assist with the cost of purchasing essential school clothing for families who are on a qualifying benefit.

We are aware that many of our families who are entitled to this support have not signed up yet. For many families this may be because their child in in Primary 1-5 and free school meals are provided as standard for all pupils at these stages. However, we would like to remind families that applying for the free Meal/Breakfast Club grant will also allow pupils to access Breakfast club free of charge where pupils are provided with a full breakfast and have the opportunity to socialise and play with friends.

We would like to encourage all of our families who believe they may be entitled to the free School Meal/Breakfast Club and Clothing grant to apply. Please click on the link below for further information –

Strike Action January 2023- Parent Letter from Douglas Hutchison (Executive Director of Education)

Dear Parent/Carer,

School closures update due to ongoing industrial action – 10, 11 & 16 January 2023
I wrote to you before the end of term about the next round of industrial action that has been called by several teacher unions and I said I would update you when the schools went back.
Unfortunately, there has been no change to the planned strikes and because we have no certainty on how many teachers will report for work, we have been left with no option but to close schools to pupils on the following days:

Tuesday 10 January 2023: All Primary schools, including ASL primary schools (Secondary
schools open as normal)

Wednesday 11 January 2023: All secondary schools, including ASL secondary schools
(Primary schools open as normal)

Monday 16 January 2023 – Primary and Secondary schools, including ASL schools.

Our intention is that nursery classes and standalone nurseries will open as normal. I apologise once again for a situation that is beyond the Council’s control, since pay negotiations take place at a national level. I know that having to make alternative arrangements so soon into the
new term is difficult for families. Details of free school meal payments for eligible families to cover the strike days will be posted on our website in the next few days.

We will continue to keep you informed as soon as we have any new information and will update the Council’s normal communication channels.

Yours sincerely
DOUGLAS HUTCHISON
Executive Director of Education

What We’ve Been Up To In The Acorn Room…

Our morning groups have been developing their listening and talking skills.  We have been learning to use our words to communicate how we are feeling and to ask for support.  We have also had opportunities to play with our peers and share resources positively.  We are developing our literacy and numeracy skills in a small group before applying what we have learned in our main class.  Our core groups are growing in confidence and like to support one another which is so lovely to see!
Afternoon  Groups

Monday Multi-Sports Group Multi-Sports
We have been learning about different sports including tennis, hockey, football and team games.  Children are encouraged to listen carefully and follow instructions.  We support children to have a growth mindset when facing a challenge and to give every activity their best try.  Children also have some calm play time in the Acorn Room where they have opportunities to build their communication skills in a small group.
Tuesday PEEK Group
In this group we have been developing our art skills and outdoor learning experiences.  We are lucky to welcome children and staff from Antonine Primary at this time.  It has been great to build positive relationships with children and adults from another school.  Children particularly enjoy outdoor cooking sessions and getting involved in some messy art!  Jenifer from PEEK loves to gather the children’s views and create fabulous lessons that grab their interest!

Our coach Sharon is so impressed with the progress this group are making!  We are seeing some great, supportive interactions between our pupils.  Chldren are developing their football knowledge and also their positive communication skills.  Sharon loves to encourage the pupils to share what they have learned and support their friends.
Thursday PEEK – Playground Buddies Page 46 | School playground cartoon Images | Free Vectors, Stock Photos & PSD
With support and training from our PEEK partners, a selection of our Primary 5’s have been learning to be playground buddies.  This involves the children taking on a leadership role in supporting younger pupils to play games positively.  This has been a big challenge for our P5’s.  They have been working hard to build their confidence and communication skills and have led some play for our Primary 4 pupils.  Keep up the great work P5 Playground Buddies!
Friday PE and Sensory Play Group  Free Vector | Cartoon illustration of children in physical education class
For some of our pupils, being in the gym hall in a large group can be challenging.  This session gives those pupils the opportunity to participate in physical activity while in a small group; this is then followed by some lovely, calm sensory time.  We hope to build the children’s confidence and provide some positive routines in the gym hall that our pupils can transfer when using the space with their main class.  Our current focus is following safety rules in the gym hall and children are making steady progress.

Allergy Notice

Camstradden Primary is an allergy aware school. We want keep all our children and staff safe. As some members of our school community have severe allergies to nuts we kindly request that families avoid giving pupils products containing nuts for break/lunch for example Kinder Bueno, Peanut Butter, Nutella & Snickers.

Thank you in advance for your continued support.
