Book Reviews

This is where our P5/6 share our favourite books and recommend them to other boys and girls 🙂

Sharing a book review:

1.) Tell us what the name of the book is?

2.) Who is the author and illustrator?

3.) What was a really cool/interesting part of the book?

4.) Would you recommend it to anybody? If yes, why? If not, why?

5.) How many stars would you give it? (1= It was a terrible book –> 5 = An amazing book!)

Homework: Wednesday 25th April (Completed)

Homework this week consists of:

1.) 10 spelling words to be written (in rainbow colours, newspaper cutouts, in sand with a photo taken etc) three times and three sentences in their homework jotter. You can mix and match the three ways you do it; write one in rainbow colours, cut one set out in newspapers and just type the last one etc – it is up to you!

2.) BugClub Reading Books/Online Bugclub – pages to be read/task will be written on homework marker to do in your homework jotter/Glow Blogs.

– Finding WOW words and explaining what they mean, as well as why you think the author has chosen those particular words – WOW words are words that you might not often use in your writing, or are words that help you visualise more clearly a scene/idea/character in your text when reading.

  • Example 1: The word “ecstatic” might be a WOW word because it gives you the image of a more intense and wild feeling of happiness, rather than just saying “happy” which might only give a sense of calm, regular, bog-standard smile on someone’s face.
  • Example 2: The word “colossal” might be a WOW word because it really shows that something is big on an incredible scale, whereas the word “big” may only suggest a couple of metres.

– In 3 long sentences, choose and explain what is your favourite part of the story you read – Please pick a section of the story that you enjoyed the most and explain why you enjoyed it. Avoid saying “…because it was interesting!” Explain WHY it was interesting!

– Pick something that you have learned from the book– Pick a fact from the book that you have read; it could be how you make something, or how you do something etc. Explain if you will use that skill again, or if you would like to make use of what you have learned.

3.) Topic: Researching your given dynasty/dynasties – You have been assigned a dynasty to research in class, and classwork will be based on your research so make sure this section of the homework is completed. It is groupwork and each person from the group will be expected to contribute out of fairness!

  • You can explore the internet using google, wikipedia, youtube videos etc to find information on your assigned dynasty.
  • You will be expected to bring in information based on:
    • Date ruled by dynasty
    • 5-6 images to do with your dynasty that you have found from the internet; either in printed form, or on a USB, or copy and pasting a link onto this blog post so that we can print it in school.
    • 3 x facts about your dynasty (information that you have perhaps not already found in class)
    • Be able to explain why your particular dynasty was important to YOU and why you think other people would want to find out about it
    • Then… 1 final fun fact that you might have come across. It can be funny, or silly, BUT it has to be factual.

The information that you research, collect and share with your group should be things that you have made sense of. I do not want to see printed pages and pages of text that you do not understand. I might quiz you in class to make sure this does not happen.  It is pointless to bring in information that you don’t understand.  It does not have to be complicated!

Lastly, make sure you take note of where you found your information from: library book – title of book, internet – what website. person – who was it that told you the information.

Science: Digestive Systems

New term, new science topic. This term we are looking at body systems and to start it off, we had a nosey at how our digestive systems work.  Some of us remember it from P3 but we are hoping to look at it in much more depth this term! Here we are acting out our digestive systems. It’s a shame a few of our digestive systems were a bit broken; organs being in the wrong places and doing weird things, but, we rectified it and discussed how it should be after acting them out. Next week Miss Li said she would do an experiment with us to see the digestive system in action!  There is also a video of how the digestive system works to remind ourselves if we forget!

Homework: Wednesday 28th March (completed)

Homework this week consists of:

1.) 10 spelling words to be written (in rainbow colours, newspaper cutouts, in sand with a photo taken etc) three times and three sentences in their homework jotter. You can mix and match the three ways you do it; write one in rainbow colours, cut one set out in newspapers and just type the last one etc – it is up to you!

2.) BugClub Reading Books/Online Bugclub – pages to be read/task will be written on homework marker to do in your homework jotter/Glow Blogs.

Write three questions based on what you have read – Try to include a variety of literal, inferential and evaluative questions.

  • A literal question asks you to find facts explicitly (very obviously shown in the text) located “on the lines”.
    E
xamples of literal questions (given that the text actually has the answer written down and you just need to skim or scan the text to find it):  What is the name of the text? What is the character’s name?
  • An inferential question asks you to read ‘between the lines’ where the answer will not be as straight forwardly written down, but rather, you have to find clues to reach your answer:
    E
xamples of inferential questions (encourage you to scan for ideas/actions of characters or descriptions):  How do you know the main character was angry? Who do you think felt angry? What were the motives behind the main character’s actions?
  • An evaluation question asks the reader to decide whether he or she agrees with the author’s ideas or point of view in light of his/her own knowledge.  These questions can be answered from “in your head”.
    E
xamples of evaluative questions (encourage you to give your opinion after reading the text):  What do you think of the text? What kind of person do you think the author is? How did you feel about the main character?

Choose a topic based on what you have read and put it in your own wordsPlease summarise the topic and put it in your own words wherever possible.  Understandably, if they are names of things then you cannot put those in your own words! You can, however, add your own opinion to it – as long as you make it clear that it is  your own opinion.

3.) Maths: Beat that challenge! Try your best! Do working on the back of the sheet if you need to. Try a new strategy! Please try the questions yourself – give your parents/guardians a break. If you’re not sure, come and ask me. Just make sure you don’t do it the day before the due date!!!!

P.s. Use your homework guidance sheets to help you. It’s what they are there for.  They are like cheat sheets!

Homework: Wednesday 21st March (Completed)

Homework this week consists of:

1.) 10 spelling words to be written (in rainbow colours, newspaper cutouts, in sand with a photo taken etc) three times and three sentences in their homework jotter. You can mix and match the three ways you do it; write one in rainbow colours, cut one set out in newspapers and just type the last one etc – it is up to you!

2.) BugClub Reading Books/Online Bugclub – pages to be read/task will be written on homework marker to do in your homework jotter/Glow Blogs.

  • Draw a scene and explain why – Pick a scene from the chapter that you have read, or from somewhere in your book, and draw it.  Then explain in a couple of sentences why you liked it, or thought it was significant/important to the story as a whole.
  • Summarise up to…. – Summarise what you have read.  This does not mean copying the story word-for-word, but rather, take out the main parts of the story (the main idea/key idea) and re-write it into your own words in 3-4 sentences.

3.) Sumdog Competition – Please spend at least 1 hour on Sumdog for homework this week.  It starts tomorrow (Friday 16th March) at 8am, and finishes at 8pm on March 22nd!

Here are some rules to follow:

  • Students can play at any time.
  • For the score to count, the Glasgow Maths Contest activity must be showing in the green panel on the left of the student’s screen when they click to start each game.
  • Their scores are based on correct answers.
  • A class’s score is the average of the scores from all students from that class who take part.

STEM: Construction and Materials

Tackling another “James Dyson STEM Challenge” we made homemade waterbombs with our origami skills.  Looking at a famous architect Shigeru Ban who created buildings out of cardboard, we aimed to make waterbombs through 4 different types of materials to test which type of material, alongside folding, would retain water for the longest. Here are our results in the video:

Here are some photos from the folding stage:

Language of the Month: Mandarin

Today we had the honour of Zoie’s sister, Phoebe, come in to tell us a story in Mandarin.  It was a story that we were all actually very familiar with – “Pinocchio.”  However, some of us were busy helping the nursery children get used to primary school life so here it is for those who missed it.

Holi Assembly

Today the P2s had their Holi Assembly (postponed from last Friday due to the snow days). They had a fantastic assembly and the dancing was full of energy. Then we had some colour fun!

STEM: Testing our bridges

Today we completed our “Construction Challenge” so it was time to check how sturdy and solid our bridges were.  Here is the video demonstrating the testing of the bridge.  Their bridges had to support a bag of 1kg sugar for at least 15secs; standing up and on it’s side.

Language of the Month: Polish (last month)

Last month’s “Language of the Month” was Polish but we never had the chance to listen to some Polish story books, but Liliana’s (P4/5) gran kindly offered to come in and read us a story.  It was interesting to hear that a lot of the Polish words sounded just like English.
