Snow Days – School Closures!

Hope you have all been snuggled up and kept cosy during the snow days.  Sadly the school has been closed to ensure that you are all safe at home between Wednesday – Friday, while Storm Emma passed by.

Looking forward to seeing you all back on Monday at school (unless there are more weather surprises!)

Topic: Making a Movie “Pet’s Day” Filming

Today we were filming one of the scenes in our short movie and it involved pets. Some of our P5/6s kindly brought in their pets to star in our movie: Iona (Domino the Cat), Reece (Jasper the Dog), Ike (Jen the Dog), Abi (Buster the Budgie), Amelia & Sam (Mr. Cuddles the Hamster) and last but not least, Jordan (Buttons the Cat).  The atmosphere this afternoon was amazing – some of the other classes came into visit the pets after we were finished filming the “Pet’s Day” shots/scene.  If only we could have our pets in every single day… that would be amaaaazzzing!!!!

Homework: Wednesday 28th February (Completed)

Homework this week consists of:

1.) 10 spelling words to be written (in rainbow colours, newspaper cutouts, in sand with a photo taken etc) three times and three sentences in their homework jotter. You can mix and match the three ways you do it; write one in rainbow colours, cut one set out in newspapers and just type the last one etc – it is up to you!

2.) BugClub Reading Books/Online Bugclub – pages to be read/task will be written on homework marker to do in your homework jotter/Glow Blogs.

  • Can you spot a connection in the form of a text-to-text (have you read similar books with similar ideas/similar author?), text-to-self (does any part of the story remind you of something that has happened to yourself in your own life) or text-to-world (does it make you aware of the bigger world; can you relate it to the news or real life stories that are not linked to your own life?)?

3.) Maths: Beat that challenge! Try your best! Do working on the back of the sheet if you need to. Try a new strategy! Please try the questions yourself – give your parents/guardians a break. If you’re not sure, come and ask me. Just make sure you don’t do it the day before the due date!!!!

P.s. Use your homework guidance sheets to help you. It’s what they are there for.  They are like cheat sheets!

Topic: Making a Movie

The filming has commenced! Martyn has volunteered to help us, alongside Kevin, to make our movie.  It has been an incredibly short but packed week. Chinese New Year Assembly AND filming all in the one day – I imagine we will have a lovely weekend snoozing away with all the hard work we have put in for the past two days.

The photos demonstrate our Sound Effects Team (Reece and Shivangi) and Camera/Director crew (The Alhujaili brothers, and Ike & Adam) hard at work.  Amelia is our main character!

Chinese New Year Assembly

The Chinese New Year Assembly was a success this morning. We told a story about how the Zodiacs came about and told our audience what Chinese people might do on certain days of the Chinese New Year festivities.  There were plenty of people wearing red. An incredibly lucky colour!!!!!

Here are a few photos after the assembly (as we were too busy performing to capture any videos or photos). Many thanks to Zoie, from P7, for helping us sing the Chinese part of our song too!

Maths: Measurement

In maths we moved onto our next topic of ‘measurement.’  We had discussions in the class about where we might use measurement and what type of tools we might use to measure the lengths, widths, breadths, and heights of things.  There were lots of ideas such as; rulers, measuring tapes, metre sticks and trundle wheels.  Everybody in the class was able to say what tool was the most appropriate tool for measuring particular objects.   So, Miss Li asked us to select an appropriate tool to measure each other – the unanimous vote was for “the measuring tape” from Ikea. Firstly, we estimated our partner’s heights, then we accurately measured our partners, and then found the difference between our estimates and accurate measurements to see who managed to make the closest guess!

…and here is a “measurement song” to help us (the spelling is all in American though) remember!

mm = millimetre, cm = centimetre, m = metre, km = kilometre (U.K)

Topic: Glasgow Film Theatre Short Films

The GFT arranged for schools to go and watch “Paddington 2” yesterday, and today they arranged for our class to watch some short films.  The short films are meant to inspire us and give us a better idea of how our own topic/short film could be; using a short amount of time to explain a story or idea to its audience. Here is one of the short films we watched:

Homework: Wednesday 21st February (Completed)

2.) BugClub Reading Books/Online Bugclub – pages to be read/task will be written on homework marker to do in your homework jotter/Glow Blogs.

  • Find WOW words: WOW words are words that capture the attention of the reader.  They are not just “words that you do not know” but they are words that make your stories/non-fiction books stand out, .For example, The boy flickered his eyes at the sight of the beautiful girl.                                    I would choose the word flickered as my WOW word because it makes the reader imagine the way the boy is moving his eyelids (open and shutting really quickly) rather than simply saying “blinked.”  It also gives you the image of a flicking switch so it’s giving off quite a mechanical image.

3.) Maths: Beat that challenge! Try your best! Do working on the back of the sheet if you need to. Try a new strategy! Please try the questions yourself – give your parents/guardians a break. If you’re not sure, come and ask me. Just make sure you don’t do it the day before Wednesday!!!!

Health & Wellbeing: CPR & Recovery Position Training

Today was exceptionally busy with visitors! Dr. Tom (a paediatric A&E doctor from the Royal Hospital for Children), came into our class today to teach us how to react to emergency situations during a cardiac arrest.  Not only did we learn about Dr. Tom, we were also introduced to another doctor.  DR. ABC! It’s a mnemonic for: Danger, Response *call for help during this* Airway, Breathing, Circulation)! We learned to carry out CPR on a poorly person if ABC was non-existent, and to put the ill patient in a recovery position if we could detect ABC.  It was a lot of fun, and we are all now very aware of keeping ourselves safe, as well as those that may need our help if we pass them by in an emergency situation.

“Bad CPR is better than no CPR.  You could save a life!” said Dr. Tom.

Here in our video is Dr. Tom demonstrating the Recovery Position on Jay.  There are also photos of the day below – please leave your comments 🙂

Topic (Determined to Make Movies): Practising camera work with our film maker!

As another Tuesday flew by, Kevin (film maker) returned to work with us on our production skills for our movie.  We were looking at some technical aspects of the production i.e. camera work, storyboarding-backwards (watching a film clip and breaking it back down into a storyboard) and the types of shots we could use to make an effective short-film.  Fingers crossed that we will be starting our filming the week after the Mid Term break!
