STEM challenge

This term the children  had a challenge – they had to use their teamwork skills, and lots of other skills too, to build a house that would stay standing in strong ‘wind’!

The class worked hard in their groups, and some of their buildings stayed standing after the hairdryer test.

3D shapes

We just finished the mini-marathon in the rain!  Well done P4!

We will do a longer mini-marathon next week!

After we came back, we got warmed up and spent some time  building some 3D shapes.

Can you find the triangular and pentagonal prisms?

We also tried to make a cone and a pyramid.

Comment below and tell us – how many vertices does a triangular prism have?

Senses

In science we are investigating our senses. This week we investigated SIGHT.

We tried looking at afterimage by looking at a bright image for 20 seconds.

It might work better on a tablet or laptop or PC monitor, as the image will be brighter, so if you want to try at home the link is below!

https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/experiment-flag.html

We also tried to make the size of our pupils change, by keeping them in the dark and then in the bright light.  You can try that at home too!

If you want to read even more, there are some eye facts at this website: http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/humanbody/eyes.html

Primary 4

Welcome to Primary 4!

Mrs Patterson and Ms Tierney are excited to start a new year and a new topic.

We are lucky enough to have new children in our class and the rest of the class have been very welcoming.

Soon we will update the blog with photos of some of our learning from this year.

Please try to comment on the posts so we know you have read them!

Lung Capacity Investigations

We were learning about our lungs, and investigated how much air our lungs can hold.

We blew through a straw into a bottle of water, and pushed the air out.  Some of us managed to push the air out a 500ml bottle, some pushed the air out a 1 litre bottle, and some people managed to push all of the air out a 1.5litre bottle!

“We have been learning about the human body.  This week we learned all the bones in the skeleton.” Ethan

“In maths we have been learning about fractions.  I like doing sums.” Malachi

CHALLENGE QUESTIONS:

Which bone is the longest bone in the skeleton?

Which ocean would you most like to visit and why?

Write your answer in the comments.

P3 have been investigating friction to help them design a buggy.

The class have been really interested in their new engineering project, and lots of children are choosing engineering activities during structured play times.
