Percentages, Decimals and Fractions

On the last day of term, we had a challenge. Which group would be able to match up the fractions, decimals and percentages that were equivalent to each other the fastest?

It was a tight race to the finish with lots of confusions caused by the 0.01 and 0.1 decimals but we did it in the end! The equivalences are now on display in our classroom to try to help us to memorise them but here they are in case you’d like to know too!

(≡ means equivalent to)

1 100% 1/1

0.5 50% 1/2

0.25 25% 1/4

0.75 75% 3/4

0.1 10% 1/10

0.01 1% 1/100

Points Mean Pizza Party!

P5 has collected over 4000 Dojo Points as a class so far this year! As our treat for breaking the next 1000 barrier, Mrs Brightman helped us to make our own pizzas. We mixed the dough, kneaded it, made a base shape then added toppings before wating them!

Two of us tried a chocolate pizza but it actually wasn’t that great! The cheese and tomato ones were the best and a few people brought their own additional toppings like onions and mushrooms!

Golden Time with Miss McCue

Miss McCue is a student teacher and was helping us in P5 for most of last term.

During Golden Time on Fridays, she was running a great club called ‘Build It’ where we had free time to experiment with all sorts of construction materials.

Now Miss McCue’s placement has finished, we’ll miss her!

Science Week Workshop

Before the holidays, we had a visit from two science specialists! They taught us about molecules and how all the matter in the universe is composed of atoms. We got to create some molecule models from little balls and sticks that represented the elements: oxygen, hydrogen and carbon.

It was amazing to find out that all sorts of things were made from just these three elements combined in different ways. Not just water (H2O – hydrogen and oxygen) but very complicated things like nail varnish remover and washing powder!

We all got a taste of what chemistry is really all about!

St Albert’s is a WWF Conservation Champion School!

During Eco-Week, you all raised money with your Danceathon to sponsor a tiger through WWF! Look at what your money has done and the email from WWF below!

Thank you for making The St. Albert’s Primary into a Tiger Protector.
By giving your support you’re helping to write what could be the biggest conservation success of out time. We can’t do it without you!
This is The St. Albert’s Primary’s first edition of Tiger News. We’ve got lots of beautiful stories, videos and updates in store – can you share this with them? I hope you both enjoy reading it.

Dear The St. Albert’s Primary, Welcome to the team!
How you’re helping: restoring tiger habitats
We’re working hard to link up pockets of tiger habitat in the Terai Arc landscape. Since we began working in the Khata Corridor, which connects protected places in Nepal and India, the forest area has increased and is used by tigers to move between the two.
This stunning tiger was spotted on the move in the Terai Arc region. Your support helps fund the teams that work to keep this habitat and others safe for tigers.
We know that tigers can recover quickly. With enough protection, access to prey and water, and space, they can bounce back. It’s just one of the things your support is helping us do for tigers.

Learning Log 24/03/17

We’ve had a busy two weeks with our Tramway performance, a house trip for Venus to the Science Centre, assessments of our Term 3 work and an afternoon at the library. We also made pizzas as a reward for getting to 4000 Dojo points as a class and they were delicious!

Last week in Science week, we learned:

  • that gravity and friction are forces
  • about solids, liquids and gases
  • that some changes are reversible and some are irreversible
  • some words to label a skeleton like skull, pelvis and ribs
  • to use the senses for describing
  • about different molecules with our STEM
  • what it feels to rehearse and perform on a real professional dance stage!

This week, we have:

  • learned a new game in P.E. called Pirates where you have to steal from other teams
  • had visitors from Glendale Gaelic school
  • learned about Dewey Decimal system at Pollokshields Library
  • given our opinions to the inspectors who are visiting after the holidays
  • assessed our Term 3 learning
  • thought about signs of spring and made arty crafty things for our wall
  • learned about the legend of Robin Hood

Visit to Stirling Castle

Last Thursday, the sun shone on P5 (the only sunny day all week!) for our trip to Stirling Castle.

We had a fantastic visit seeing all the amazing parts of the castle that we had been learning about in class. We met the Queen’s Ladies-in-Waiting and learned a dance with them! We saw the roasted peacocks and pig’s head ready in the kitchens for the banquet.

This week, P5 are creating brochures about Stirling Castle based on our visit – watch this blog for some pictures of their fab work coming soon!
