Moving on to Secondary School

Most of our pupils transfer to Glenwood High School.

However you do have a choice of High Schools, please see for further information on school choices. Catholic pupils may prefer to attend St Andrews High School in Kirkcaldy.

If you are not in the catchment area for your chosen High School you must write to the headteacher requesting a place. Please do this as soon into your child’s P7 year as possible so that you can take advantage of all transition information events.

We will ask you during Term 1 or early in Term 2 of your child’s P7 year which High School you are likely to send your child to. Do not worry if you have not decided at this point, simply let us know which schools you are considering and then let us know your final decision once it has been made. This allows us to pass on information to you about forthcoming events in each Secondary School and allows us to begin the transition process for children.

Transition

We have a comprehensive transition process formed in partnership with Glenwood High School.

Towards the end of P6 we alert Glenwood to any medical, behavioural or learning needs so that they can plan ahead for your child’s entry. A member of the Glenwood team will be invited to all multi-agency review meetings for children with additional needs.

During Term 1

You will be invited along with your child to attend an open evening in Glenwood High School. Here you will be able to have a look around the building and get a flavour of what happens in S1.

During Terms 1-4

Teachers from Glenwood will visit children at Southwood. This may be done informally, or by Glenwood taking or supporting lessons. This is an opportunity for the children and staff to get to know each other in an environment where the children are comfortable and confident. The children will also have the opportunity to attend events at Glenwood, including a 2 day taster.

During Term 3

All children from the Glenwood cluster have the opportunity to get together at a residential experience at Dalguise. The children get to know other children who will also be entering first year as well as getting to know the staff rom Glenwood. This experience helps the children cope with change, set personal targets and work together in teams – as well as being great fun!

Some children require additional arrangements for transition – this is arranged in conjunction with parents.

Belong, believe and be happy!
