Co-regulation is the interactive process which supports self-regulation development from birth until young adulthood. This process looks different at different stages of development with the capacity for self-regulation developing over time. At this stage, adults play a key role in supporting children & young people to identify & manage strong emotions.
Self-regulation is the ability to monitor and control our own behaviour, emotions, or thoughts, altering them in accordance with the demands of the situation. It includes the abilities to inhibit first responses, to resist interference from irrelevant stimulation, and to persist on relevant tasks even when we don’t enjoy them.
For all of us, this is a life-time challenge! We may not manage to do the right thing at the right time all of the time, but if we are aware of our thinking and reactions, we will get there with practice.
The guidance & resources within this site will enable practitioners to better support children & young people build a toolkit of strategies to cope with strong emotions.
