Friday 15th May

This week, we have been learning more about biodiversity as part of our topic. We have been learning about endangered species and the factors causing this.

We have been very interested in the Oyster Catcher who has chosen to lay eggs below the ramp access at our classroom. We have created some beautiful artwork of the Oyster Catcher.

In Writing, we chose who we would like to write to in order to persuade them. This included the Scottish Government, local shops and the Council. We are working hard at using openers and persuasive language.

We have been learning the difference between facts and opinions and identifying both in different texts.

In Numeracy, we have been working on number equations and our mental maths.

We have been developing our skills in PE in athletics and field sports. We also had a group representing our school in Dundee at the Pentathlon. They all did very well and won medals in the relay, short and long distance running and welly throwing!

In French, we have been learning to describe hair and eye colour.

We enjoyed working with P2 in outdoor learning and we explored food chains in our playground.

Friday 8th May

We have been writing this week to persuade our local Council to grant permission to give all pupils in Fife an extra holiday for the World Cup. We have been developing our use of persuasive language and rhetorical questions. We have also been working hard at improving our spelling and handwriting skills.

In Numeracy, we have been learning how to use number machines and calculating input and output. We have been developing our mental maths skills using 5 a day questions and Sumdog, where we have had a class competition.

In P.E, we have been working hard at improving our skills in team work in field sports and also in athletics. We have been learning about the physical and mental benefits of exercise.

In French, we have been learning our numbers and to describe family members and pets orally, also  writing.

We are continuing to explore Biodiversity in our topic and in our outdoor learning. We enjoyed learning about David Attenborough to celebrate his 100th birthday in recognition of his contribution to nature and the environment.

Friday 1st May 2026

This week we have been working hard at our mental maths skills and also completing our learning in symmetry, including problem solving challenges. We also looked outdoors to find signs of symmetry in nature and used MS Paint tools to create symmetrical images.

We have been writing persuasive letters to our local councillors regarding rubbish, why it is a problem and what we would like them to do about it. We have been focusing on using persuasive language, openers and rhetorical questions, as well as setting a formal letter out correctly.

We have also been developing our handwriting, spelling and comprehension skills.

We have begun learning about Biodiversity as our new topic and have worked well with a friend to research and create an online book about our findings.

In Loose Parts, we enjoyed working together to make animal habitats.

We have enjoyed participating in the SFA competition to create a poem or picture to inspire Scotland at the World Cup.

In French, we have continued to learn to talk about family members and numbers.

With Miss Allan, we have been developing our ICT animation skills and also learning about people who have made a difference in RME.

We have been working hard in P.E to develop our running, throwing and jumping techniques. We have also been working in teams during field games.

In our Health and Wellbeing work, we have learned about the signs of a heart attack and what we can do in an emergency situation.

We have enjoyed our drumming lessons with Mr Foggo. In Drama, we have been developing our character skills and quick improvisations.

Friday 24th April 2026

We have had a busy first week back to school!

We have been enjoying the lovely weather and taking our learning outdoors. We enjoyed athletics and field games in P.E. Today, we worked with P2 to identify minibeasts in our garden area. We also planned what we would like to do with the containers in our playground and have chosen wild flowers to help the bees we look after.

We have written informal letters about our time over the holidays and we are focusing on openers and rhetorical questions. We have also been working on our handwriting skills this week, with a a big focus on this during this term.

We have been working together to plan and develop ideas for a new healthy biscuit. We have then been creating packaging following a design brief.

In Science, we have been exploring dissolving and what affects dissolving rates.

In French, we have been developing our number skills and introducing others in our live lessons.

We are participating in the ‘Newport in Bloom’ art competition which is called ‘Bouquet of Garden Flowers’. We are enjoying being creative and choosing our medium for this task.

We have been working hard at our times tables in mental maths and developing our understanding of symmetry in maths.

We had a visit from the RNLI to help keep us safe when we are around the sea.

Thursday 2nd April 2026

We had our end of term Spring Service today and we were confident to share our information about Easter in French speaking countries from around the world. We have learned some more vocab linked to Easter using our French skills.

We had a class debate this week around the use of screen time. Most felt that too much was not a good thing and were able to explain their thinking. Everyone wrote balanced discussion pieces of writing presenting both sides of the debate. Most were able to use rhetorical questions.

We have finished our work on time and completed some assessments to show our understanding.

We learned about Tanka poems and created our own Spring themed ones, working well with a friend to use the correct amount of syllables.

In P.E, we competed well in mini games of hockey and some team games to end the term. We carried out analysis of nutritional information on food packaging to understand what the labels tell us.

We have enjoyed carrying out further experiments to explore changes and chemical reactions. This has involved an egg in vinegar, making a lava lamp and coke/mentos! We have been making good predictions and recording our results.

Friday 27th March

Our final Friday of the term! We have had another busy week in P5.

We enjoyed participating in a debate all about junk food advertising and whether it was correct to have a ban before 9pm. Lots of interesting points were made and we were learning to think carefully before we contribute and listen respectfully to the points made by others. We then wrote a discussion piece of writing including both sides of the debate. Our next step is to add rhetorical questions and use more persuasive language.

We have been learning strategies to calculate intervals of time and interpretating timetables, including ones in our local area.

In our Health and Wellbeing work, we have been analysing food packaging to see what the information tells us. We have also been developing our skills in gymnastics and giving feedback about each other’s performance.

We have chosen to find out about how Easter is celebrated in French speaking countries across the world to share at the Easter service next week. We have used ICT skills to research and then display our findings.

We have learned about vocabulary linked to Easter in French and designed our own French Easter cards in celebration.

We have been learning further about chemical reactions and reversible and irreversible changes.

In outdoor learning, we were exploring textures in our environment.

This week, we have met with our pupil committees over the week and have enjoyed working with others from across the school.

 

Friday 20th March 2026

This week, we wrote our last piece of procedural writing. We had a choice about what we would write about and this included a variety from how to play football to Pokemon.

We have been exploring the difference between vegan and vegetarian diets and planned a balanced day of eating for both. We also learned about the dangers of too much sugar consumption and the impact on your health. We made persuasive posters to encourage people to make healthy swaps.

In our Numeracy work, we have been learning about different aspects of time. We have been learning how to calculate 24 hour time, timetables and time intervals.

We have been learning to appreciate different types of music and identify the instruments played. We loved listening to Queen and We Will Rock You and then playing along using body percussion. We continue to enjoy our music lessons with Mr Foggo as we develop our drumming skills further.

We have concluded our Victorian topic by thinking about what we have learned and what skills we have developed. We also made quizzes for each other using Microsoft Forms.

In Art, we designed socks for Rock your Sock day, thinking about line, shape and pattern.

We have been working hard on team work skills in P.E during Gymnastics and Hockey.

In French, we have been revising talking about foods we like and dislike.

We enjoyed exploring the outdoor environment with P2 pupils and identifying signs of Spring.

In Science, we have continued to explore chemical changes and writing up our findings as a report.

We loved watching the Red Nose Talent Show today!

Friday 13th March

We enjoyed our trip yesterday to Dundee Science Centre. We had lots of time to explore the exhibits and make links to our learning in class.

In Writing, we have continued to develop our skills in writing a procedure and thinking carefully about our use of adverbs and visuals to make our instructions very clear.

In P.E, we have been developing our skills in Gymnastics and Hockey. We have been working hard to work well with others when performing or in a team.

We have shared presentations from our Victorians topic, showing confidence to present to an audience.

In Numeracy, we have been completing assessments to show our understandings of different aspects of fractions.

We enjoyed outdoor learning again with P2 pupils. We conducted a litter survey and taught P2s an outdoor game.

In French, we have been learning to introduce family members.

We worked well with P6 pupils to create vehicles from Victorian times in Loose Parts.

We have been using ICT skills to display our learning in RME.

In Art, we have been using zentangle patterns to create beautiful vases of flowers on our cards to share with our Mums on Mother’s Day,

Friday 6th March

We enjoyed World Book Day celebrations this week; there were lots of great costumes and props on show. We had fun completing quizzes, art activities and maths puzzles. We also had an author live event with Holly Webb on Monday, who told us all about her new book and what it takes to be author.

We have continued our work on fractions this week, and finding an amount of a fraction. We have also been adding and subtracting fractions.

In Writing, we have written another procedural piece and how to make a Victorian Sponge. We looked to see if we could include adverbs in our writing.

In P.E, we have been developing our skills in gymnastics and hockey. We have been planning a healthy day of eating, thinking about the eatwell balanced plate.

We have designed front covers books in art for the P7 World Book Day competition, all about Buttercup, our school mascot.

In Science, we have been learning about carbon capture and carried out experiments involving lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda!

We enjoyed outdoor learning with P1/2 and creating characters and scenes from books with natural materials.

In French, we have been learning about animals and how to ask others what pets they have.

We continue to develop our music skills with Mr Foggo in drumming.

Friday 27th February

This week we have been exploring food and cooking during Victorian times. We have learned about the differences between rich and poor diets and the difference to our diets. We have used ICT to display our findings.  We linked this to the Eatwell plate to compare balanced diets from then to now. We also planned our own healthy day of eating, looking to make it balanced in our Health and Wellbeing work.

We finished making our Victorian Houses and gave feedback to each other on what we liked and what could be improved. In our Writing this week, we have been learning about writing clear and detailed instructions on how to make our Victorian houses. We learned about the use of Imperative (bossy) verbs and how to set them out correctly.

We have continued our learning on fractions and how to find equivalent fractions and how to simplify them to. We have begun learning how to find fractions of an amount using our division skills. We created pizzas to show our understanding of equivalent fractions.

In P.E, we have been learning about different balances and rolls in gymnastics. We completed our final session of rugby too.

In French, we have been learning about how to ask and say where we live, colours and numbers.

We conducted experiments in Science about how to use different materials to stop ice from melting. We wrote up our findings into a science report, summing up what we know about insulators.

In outdoor learning, we looked at our bird feeders and used natural materials to create nests.

In Drama, we have been taking on character roles from Victorian times and making short scenes to present to an audience.

We have continued to develop our drumming skills with Mr Foggo.

In Art, we have been developing our line drawing skills and thinking about our foreground, middle ground and background in our Victorian pictures.
