This week we have been writing poems with the theme ‘I Have  A Dream’. We are entering them into a competition. Children were able to write any style of poem and some have chosen acrostic while some have chosen free verse or rhyme. They are all super and have themes like being an astronaut or footballer or winning an Olympic medal or having a monster creep up behind you!

In Numeracy, we have continued learning to use column subtraction and also finishing off our subtraction topic with a mini assessment.

In Dance, we learnt how to do the Flying Scotsman and the Dashing White Sergeant. We also created our our dance to Scottish music thinking about sequences fitting into 4 counts of 8. We watched each other and gave constructive feedback.

We had an amazing visit from Robert in P7 who told us all about his bagpipes and played for us! It was amazing! We were able to ask him  questions too! We have made bagpipes in art using a weaving technique to produce a tartan for the bag. They look fantastic.

In Science, we learnt what energy is and all about different types of energy, like sound, heat and light. We also discussed how electricity can be produced using renewable or non-renewable energy sources. We know that sources like solar, wind and hydro are better for the environment because they won’t run out and they don’t produce harmful gases.

This week we have been learning about Robert Burns. We read about him and used the internet to write a fact file. We have also learned about what would happen at a Burns Night celebration and have made invitations on PowerPoint to our own Burns party. We worked in pairs to plan our invitation and developed our design skills when making our invite. Miss Amy was very impressed with how the pairs worked together and showed the skills they had learnt.

In Art, we drew a thistle and used pastels to colour it. We also used black pen to outline and make the image pop out. They look great.

In Literacy, we wrote a newspaper report about a section of our class novel, The Twits Next Door. The Twits had been tricked into wearing Mrs Lovely’s Disco Pants and ended up dancing in the town centre with a big crowd watching them. Local newspaper reporters saw what happened and wrote about it for the evening newspaper. Some children have started using quotes from onlookers in their newspaper articles.

In PE, we have been learning different Scottish dances. This week we learnt group dances called the Virginia Reel and the Flying Scotsman.

In Health and Wellbeing, we used KitBag to share how we were feeling and also share any worries. We spoke about how we can manage some of our worries and used feathers to ‘blow’ them away. Blowing the feathers away is also a good way to calm our breathing if we are upset.

In Numeracy, we learned how to do column subtraction and have started exchanging.

Friday 23rd January 2026

On Monday, we did our assembly! We performed Giraffes Can’t Dance and it was fantastic! We got lots of great feedback from the other classes and from the families. We then wrote a newspaper article about it. We looked at a newspaper article to find the features and came up with the Steps to Success. They included a headline, an 4W introduction, WOW words and openers.

In Numeracy, we have continued to learn and practice strategies for subtraction. This week we used a split strategy and some children moved on to subtracting 3-digit numbers.

In French, we learnt some of the French words for things in the classroom, like table, chair and computer. We labelled a picture of a classroom and then had to show someone around the room, showing theme where things were in French.

In PE, we did circuits and Scottish dancing. We learnt the Military 2-Step and and the Canadian Barn Dance. We managed to do a progressive Canadian Barn Dance too where you change partners as you go. We discussed why we learn Scottish Dancing in school. We decided that it was fun and helped form friendships plus it is part of Scottish Culture. Our new topic, is Scottish Traditions and Cultures. We learnt some Scots words and the children also performed the Scots poems that they had learnt. From our class, Lochlan, Victor and Orla are going to perform for the school on Monday! Congratulations!

Friday 16th January 2026

This week we have each made a fantastic mask for our assembly on Monday. We have lots of different jungle animals. The class have learnt their lines brilliantly and their dancing is amazing! We have also got lots of props including a violin and two guitars made from card! They are going to be awesome.

We have written a diary entry, imagining that we were the boy from the short animation ‘The Present’. We were able to include lots about how the boy was feeling and we also added lots of great description. We have been colour marking our work and if we feel we haven’t shown enough of one of the Steps to Success we write another sentence at the end. For example, maybe we didn’t use ‘because’, so we write another sentence with ‘because’ in it just to show we can!

In Numeracy, we are working on different subtraction strategies using a number line to take a number away in 2 or 3 steps. Some of us can do this in our heads, while others prefer to jot it down or use a number square.

We are enjoying our new class novel The Twits Next Door. The Lovely family have moved in next door and it has been funny finding out the ways in which they spread their loveliness! Today, we designed our own new ‘Lovely Invention’ to spread more loveliness!

This afternoon, we learnt about different animals that could be pets. We learnt how to say if we had a pet or not.

Friday 9th January 2026

Welcome back, everyone! Happy New Year.

This week we have been working hard rehearsing our assembly, Giraffes Can’t Dance. Children have been learning their lines and different dances as well as preparing props. It is all looking great so far.

We have also written an imagined response to a dream that a little boy had about his Grandpa. We had to pretend we were the little boy and write to our Grandpa all about it. We had to tell him what had happened and how it made us feel. We included openers, connectives and describing words.

In Numeracy, we have started learning about subtraction. We have been using 2 and 3-step strategies and number lines to take away single and double digit numbers. The P4s have been working with 3-digit numbers.

In Health and Wellbeing, we read The Huge Bag of Worries and thought about any worries we might have and talked about what we can do about them. We realised that not all worries are that big once we have let them out and some of our worries aren’t for us to worry about and we should try to blow them away.

In PE, we have done circuits and also lots of dancing!

This week, we have also been doing our Skills Academy. Children were either developing skills through Lego building, playing board games, creating animations or printing.

Friday 19th December 2025

This week we have made our lovely snowman wrapping paper to wrap our self-portraits so that we can take them home and gift them to someone special. We are hoping to make someone feel special when we give it to them.

We have also made a beautiful Christmas angel decoration to take home today along with our Christmas cards.

In Numeracy, we have been doing some challenges using our addition and understanding or number skills.

We loved the Church Service on Thursday and really enjoyed sharing the French song about what Father Christmas wears with the congregation.

Both the P3 and P4 classes enjoyed their Christmas parties at the beginning of the week ad the whole school enjoyed singing along to the Christmas Top 10 Countdown today.

Have a great holiday, everyone.

Friday 12th December 2025

This week we have been writing a Diary Entry, imagining that we were William from our class novel, The Christmasaurus. We had to include his thoughts and feelings, plus connectives, openers and descriptive language. In Literacy, we used a thesaurus to find more interesting verbs that we can use instead of verbs like walk, run, say and laugh. We tried to use some of these in our writing along with adjectives and onomatopoeia.

We have finished our presentations for our individual presentations on either PowerPoint or KeyNote. We have written a record card with notes for our presentation so that we can try and look up at our audience when we’re speaking.

In Numeracy, we have been doing mini assessments. We have done Christmas yoga because the hall is being used for Christmas parties. We have made a beautiful Christmas card with trees of different sizes showing near, middle and far. We finished our rotation of Outdoor Learning activities and had Committees. Today we very much enjoyed the P1 Nativity too! Well done, everyone.

Friday 5th December 2025

It’s our first Festive Friday! We have been writing our jokes for Newport Primary School’s community bags. We had fun looking at lots of Christmas jokes and choosing one that we wanted to share. We hope to make someone smile at Christmas.

We have also started learning a French Christmas song about what Santa wears! We hope to share it with families at our Church Service.

In PE, we have started doing circuits to improve our fitness. We had 7 different stations that worked different muscles, developed different skills and made our heart rate and breathing faster.

In Numeracy, we have been learning column addition to help us add two 2-digit or two 3-digit numbers together.

In Health and Wellbeing, we researched a charity to find out what sort of things they do to help people or animals.

In Literacy, we started writing our individual presentations. We used the internet to research an animal of our choice and took notes about facts we wanted to share. We will be making a PowerPoint or KeyNote presentation to go with them.

In Science, we explored our senses and how it might feel if they were impaired. We went round lots of different stations and either played a game, discussed a question or investigated something all to do with our 5 senses. We learnt that our senses are very important to keep us safe and there are ways in which people who have lost a particular sense can be supported.

Friday 28th November 2025

This week we have been learning about skin and why it is a very important organ in our bodies. We learnt about what it does to protect us. We learnt how to use Book Creator on the iPad to make a book showing all of the things we had learnt. We had to include a title page, introduction, headings, facts, images and an ending. Book Creator is great because we can change the background, change the size, font and colour of the writing and add lots of images.

In Numeracy, we have learnt how to use Split Strategy to add 2 and 3 digit numbers. It involves splitting the numbers into hundreds, tens and ones or just tens and ones, and then adding these together before putting all the answers together to get the final answer. With bigger numbers it can be helpful to write out each stage.

In Art, we have learnt about Fair Isle patterns and then used this style to decorate a Christmas stocking. They look great and we have put them up in the hall to decorate it for Christmas.

In Health and Wellbeing, we thought about our needs and wants. We discussed certain things like money, food, medical care, clean air and education. We discussed that needs aren’t always available to everyone in the world. We thought about how our needs link to the Rights of the Child and how these aren’t being met for every child in the world. We thought about some of the small things that we could do to help like giving food to a food bank, donating to charity, walking to school or recycling.

In PE, we did a Minecraft yoga session.

Today, the P3s shared an assembly about Childline and the importance of asking for help if they need it. They learnt the phone number and wrote the names of trusted adults that they could talk to. The P4s will be doing this next Friday.

Friday 21st November 2025

This week we have written a leaflet about the digestive system. We had to include and introduction and and ending. We also had to use openers, connectives and adjectives. We were learning more about adjectives this week. We also had to draw illustrations for each stage of the system. We are still working on editing our work and showing where we have used openers, connectives and adjectives.

In Numeracy, we have been practising the 3-step strategy for adding 2 2-digit numbers. Some answers were over 100. Some children were doing some word problems and trial and error challenges too.

In Art, we have started a self-portrait in the style of Julian Opie. We thought it was quite a ‘cartoony’ style of art. We traced a photo of ourselves and then used it as a print to get our face drawn on a piece of art paper. The eyes and nostrils are just black dots! Next week are going to paint them and outline them in black pen. The backgrounds will be nice a bright.

In Health and Wellbeing, we designed clubs that would encourage children to be active for 60 minutes. We made posters to advertise our clubs. We had to include all the details about it, including healthy snacks! We shared our posters with the class. We know how important physical exercise is to keep our heart and lungs fit and our muscles strong. We also thought about the ways in which our families and friends support our Wellbeing by thinking of examples of each of the wellbeing indicators – Active, Healthy, Achieving, Included, Respected, Responsible, Safe and Nurtured.

In PE, we played games of 5 a side football. We had to try to find space so our team mates could pass to us.

Today, we started our committees again and then we had the final rotation in outdoor learning. We have been learning about our skeletons, how to measure in metres and all about the artist Andy Goldsworthy.
