Masterton Primary School

P5b

Mrs Ferguson’s P5b class

Topic

Our topic in Term 1 and 2 is a comparison of Australia and Scotland.    We are reading the book, Shark Bait by Justin D’Ath, which is an adventure book set in Australia.  We will be using the novel for weekly comprehension questions and also some writing tasks.  We will also be looking at topics such as culture, geography, schooling, language and landmarks.

PE

Gym is on a Tuesday morning this year.  Miss Roy will teach gym and asks that all pupils come to school on a Tuesday with suitable gym kit on.  Whilst gym will mostly be inside in the gym hall, pupils should come with a suitable jacket in case gym is outside.

Homework

Homework will be issued on a Wednesday and should be done by the next Monday.  Homework to be done will be uploaded to this website.   There will be a mixture of language, maths and other tasks linked to, for example, Topic, French or Health.  These will consolidate our learning in class.

Reading will usually be issued on the Monday, to be done for the next Monday.   Please take time to read with your child and encourage good pace and expression, as well as helping them with any difficult vocabulary or punctuation.  Please sign their Reading Record, so I can track that children are doing their reading.

I would be most grateful if parents/guardians would support your child appropriately for all homework tasks.

*Literacy

1.Reading pages – these were issued on Monday and written in your Reading Record. Try to get a parent to hear at least part of your reading. Concentrate on expression, pace and noticing the punctuation.  Ask a parent to sign your Reading Record.

Please make sure your reading book is brought in every Monday so I can hear you read on Monday or Tuesday.

REMEMBER Reading for Pleasure! – keep reading for enjoyment, as well as just doing your homework reading.  Try to read a book of your choice for at least 10 mins every night.  Be ready to tell me what you are reading and whether you would recommend it to your classmates.  Happy reading!

2. Book Week Scotland

This week is Book Week Scotland.  We have been doing DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) at various times of the week.  We have listened to an ‘Authors Live’ interview where we learned about the author, Abi Elphinstone.  She has written many books including the trilogy, “The Unmapped Chronicles”.  We have also used Blether Station cards throughout the week to discuss reading and books.

I have given the children a paper copy of a  ‘Reading Wall Challenge’ sheet this week, to encourage them to read different types of books.  They will have 2 weeks to mark off as many boxes as they can.  We will then discuss it in class together.
