Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 24/02/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log, I hope you and your family are well.

The week that’s been…

It has been a very busy week here at KHS with lots of amazing opportunities for our young people.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we had visitors from Fife Council in our school, observing learning, talking to our young people and staff and learning more about KHS. The team were very impressed by our young people, staff and school.

The team, commented favourably on young people’s uniform and respect, the positive relationships and ethos that exists in KHS, our knowledge of our young people and that the school was calm and orderly as they went around the building and at changeover times. They are happy that we know what is working well and what improvements are needed to ensure improved outcomes for all young people.

On Monday, all S1 were involved in our Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) programme. The MVP programme is a peer mentoring programme that gives young people the chance to explore and challenge the attitudes, beliefs and cultural norms that underpin all forms of gender-based violence in our society. This was led by our senior pupils. Well done to all involved.

On Wednesday, we had our Anthony Nolan champions working with Scottish Fire and Rescue Service supporting young people to join the register. Huge thanks to everyone (staff and pupils) who came along and joined the register – 85 people signed up along with many more who came for information re. joining the DKMS register (over 30’s). This has beaten our record so well done everyone!! Particular thanks to our Champions and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service who ran the event.

As ever, here is some information around DYW from Mrs Whyte: The Padlet has been updated with new opportunities, highlights include –

  • The opportunity for any interested S2-6 to join a skills workshop run by the British Army.
  • Apprenticeships – In Engineering, Gardening, Accountancy etc.
  • Summer School for S5 – Opportunity to attend a residential at some of the UK’s top Universities through Sutton Trust in a range of activities.

If you have any questions about this please see Mrs Whyte in C13.

Parent Council met on Tuesday 14th February. The minutes for this meeting are attached to the groupcall email.

Lastly, we have had some complaints from residents at Dunnikier Estate. They have complained of some young people from KHS littering on their way to / from school at various points of the day. Please can I ask parents / carers to speak to their child about this (where appropriate). We believe passionately about being a community school and good neighbours with one of our core values centring on respect for others.

The week ahead…

The school will be closed to young people on Tuesday and Wednesday next week due to the ongoing industrial action. School will be open as normal on Monday, Thursday and Friday. The letter sent on 16/02/23 by Fife council about this is attached to the groupcall email.

On Thursday, there is a Parental study skills information evening to support parents / carers of young people in S3-6 to help support their children. Information on this is attached to the groupcall email.

Lastly, we have the Friends of Kirkcaldy High School Ceilidh taking place in KHS on Friday. We look forward to seeing everyone who has signed up on the night!

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend with friends and family.

Best wishes

Chris McKay
