Rector’s Log 02/12/22

Welcome to this weeks Rectors Log, I hope you and your family are well.

The week that’s been…

It has been another busy week here at Kirkcaldy High School, with the theme of the week around Employability. Many of our young people have taken part in various employability related tasks and events.

On Tuesday, KHS hosted Kirkcaldy DYW fair. Over 40 partners attended, including from industry, local employers, College and University. All young people in S4-6 attended this event in school and were joined by young people from St Andrew’s RC High School also. The event lasted from 2pm – 6.30pm with young people, staff and families attending from all Kirkcaldy High Schools. The event was a great success with many young people speaking positively of the knowledge gained and experience they had. Well done to Mrs Whyte for organising this amazing event (and the employability week programme and tasks) and to all who supported, from the set-up to delivery. Special thanks to all partners for their input.

On Wednesday, we also hosted a STEM ‘Speed dating’ event where young people in S3 had the opportunity to meet with a range of people who all had a career in a STEM related subject. Young people had a few minutes to speak to each person and ask them questions related to their job and their experience. Again, this was another fantastic event and gave all young people a fantastic insight into the world of work through the lens of STEM. Again, well done to Dr Murray for pulling this together and to all those who attended to speak with our young people.

Finally, over the course of the week, all young people have been completing a range of tasks, through Tutor class, based around employability. These tasks have allowed all young people the opportunity to enhance their knowledge and skills around this theme.

N.B. We are keen to continue promoting positive destinations for our young people and so if you or someone you know would be able to help with hosting work experience, a career talk or even some mentoring of our pupils please get in touch.

I am also delighted to let parents / carers of S4 pupils know that we have re-arranged the S4 Parents / Carers evening from Thursday 24th November (cancelled due to industrial action) to Thursday 15th December. All appointments have been moved to this date. Please let us know if there are any concerns or problems around this by emailing our enquiries address or calling us on 01592583405.

Lastly, last Friday we held the first Friends of Kirkcaldy High School (FoKHS) race night since COVID. It was a great night with all who attended enjoying a very well organised and enjoyable evening. Money raised will be used to support KHS and our young people. We are grateful to FoKHS for the work that they do and their support of our school. Thank you.

The week ahead…

Next week, we look forward to the Christmas concert and fayre on Wednesday. This will be a fantastic occasion and another step towards bringing our community back in to KHS following all of the COVID disruption. Information is as follows:

Christmas Fayre – Wed 7 Dec, 6-8pm. Approx. 20 stalls of Christmas gifts/goodies! Money raised towards S6 Prom. Contact Jack Walsh through our normal enquiries email if interested in taking a table (£10 each).

Christmas Concert – Wed 7 Dec, 7-8.30pm approx. Evening of musical items, mulled wine and mince pies! All performers will receive complimentary tickets today. Additional tickets or anyone wanting to attend can purchase a ticket at the school office for £1. Donations for Kdy Foodbank on the night.

On Thursday, our school will again be closed to young people due to continued industrial action. All young people have access to a range of work and resources through class TEAMS or alternatively, they can access other resources online.

Finally, young people who are sitting National Qualifications in S4-6 are due to complete Prelim examinations from 12th to 20th January 2023. These examinations are an opportunity for our young people to understand where they are in their learning and will support learning conversations / feedback to help young people prepare for their formal examinations in May. Information about the prelims will be sent to Parents / Carers on Monday and young people will receive copies of the timetable at assembly next week.

I hope you and your family enjoy the weekend.

Best wishes

Chris McKay
