Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 25/11/22

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

Firstly, thank you to all young people who supported Children in Need events organised by the S5/6 Travel and Tourism class. We raised £608.64 from from the dress down day, guessing Pudsey’s birthday and the number of balloons in the minibus.

The week started here in KHS on Sunday with the Fife Festival of Music Family Funday with over 300 people coming to the school to take part in a range of fun activities. This was the 8th Family Funday and was the busiest yet.

Continuing on with the musical theme, we had a number of our talented musicians out at Asda Kirkcaldy today, supporting the start of the festive celebrations in the community.

Our seniors have also had a busy few days this week with group 1 of the travel and tourism class taking part in an Employability workshop with Sky Broadcasting. Group 2 are due to complete this next week. This programme will allow pupils to develop soft skills looked for by all employers, as well as working on building a strong CV. The workshop culminates in a trip to Sky in Dunfermline to see how Sky works, how they handle customer service enquires and hear about the opportunities available to our young people in terms of apprenticeships and employments. This ties in directly with the Customer Service and Employability units of their N5 Travel and Tourism course.

Furthermore, we had the Higher Geography and Environmental Science learners taking part in some field work at Millport and the Isle of Cumbrae. Young people got an opportunity to get involved in field study as part of this outdoor learning opportunity.

I also had the opportunity to visit S1 and S3 classes this week, speaking to young people about their learning in class and to continue to support our uniform policy. The standard of uniform continues to be good, and it is great to hear directly from our young people about their learning and to see their enthusiasm for their subjects.

Lastly, KHS Parent Council took place on Tuesday with positive and productive discussion about all things KHS. The minutes for this meeting are attached to the parent / carer email.

The week ahead…

Next week, it is KHS Employability week with a range of events planned for all. These include some tasks through tutor classes, the careers fair on Tuesday (flyer attached to email) and a speedy STEM event.

We hope to re-schedule the S4 Parents’ Evening and will communicate a proposed date to S4 Parents / Carers asap (potentially 15/12/22).

Please be aware that the Christmas Fayre and Concert are due to take place here in KHS on Wednesday 7th December. Information for this is as below:

Christmas Fayre – Wed 7 Dec, 6-8pm. Approx. 20 stalls of Christmas gifts/goodies! Money raised towards S6 Prom. Contact Jack Walsh through our normal enquiries email if interested in taking a table (£10 each).
