Dear Parent/Carer,
Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.
The week that’s been…
This week, the focus across the school has been on Remembrance. All young people attended our Remembrance house assemblies where other young people shared information about the reasons for Remembrance Day, its place in society today and all took time to reflect on the losses over the two great Wars and other conflicts that have happened, from past to present. We were also joined by a Leading Hand from the Royal Navy who spoke to young people about her role in the Royal Navy and the significance of Remembrance Day to her. I would like to thank Miss Osborne for leading and organising this very poignant production, as well as all young people and staff that supported the assemblies. On Sunday, we will have pupils and staff from the school representing KHS at the Remembrance Day parade at the Town Centre.
On Wednesday, we held our first in person Parents’ Evening for families in S2. The night was well attended, and we are grateful to Parents and Carers for coming along and interacting with our staff so positively. Our next Parents’ Evening is on Thursday 24th November for S4.
DYW Update: The Padlet has been updated with more local jobs – lots of local places are taking on Christmas temps. Remember the first place to start with applying for a job is to write a CV. There is a great guide on my World of Work to help with this. Speak to the Careers Advisors if you are not sure about where to start.
If you are in S5 and starting to think about applying to University, in particular Edinburgh University – please let Mrs Whyte know as there is a great opportunity coming up!
Over the next few weeks, young people in S4-6 will continue to study towards their National Qualifications with Prelims just around the corner (beginning of January). Lots of our staff offer a range of study support classes at lunches and after school. I will e-mail all parents / carers with a timetable on Monday of next week.
Lastly, as a school, we continue to work towards our vision of being a Happy, Inclusive and Successful school. Central to this, is our values around respect for self, respect for others and respect for learning. Over the next few weeks, we will continue to focus on these core values through our Promoting Positive Relationships policy. On Monday, all young people will be reminded of this policy through there P1 class. I will also share with you the Pupil leaflet that accompanies this as well as highlighting to you some key information around expectations for our young people in school and updating some of our processes around attendance.
The week ahead…
Next week, the school will be closed to young people on Friday 18th November for a staff in-service day.
On Thursday, 17th November, there will be a dress down day for Children in Need. This has been organised (along with other events) by the S5’6 Travel and Tourism class as part of their Employability unit. Again, if young people wish to donate, a suggested donation of £1 would help support charities associated with this event.
Finally, a reminder that the next Parent Council meeting will take place online, on Tuesday 22nd November 2022 at 6pm. Agenda and link will be sent on Friday 18th November.
I look forward to working with you again throughout this term.
Best wishes
Chris McKay
