Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 04/11/22

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

It has been another busy week here at KHS with lots of young people taking part in enriching experiences both in and out of the class.

Over the past two weeks, we have had 10 young people taking part in Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. This group are working towards the DofE silver award, and we look forward to hearing about their success over the coming weeks. Thank you to Ms Wallace and all other staff involved in supporting this.

On Sunday, KHS hosted a social event for all Fife LGBT+ school social groups. Over 60 young people attended from across Fife and all had a fantastic time, socialising and taking part in a variety of events and games. Thank you to Dr Murray for organising and coordinating this event.

Yesterday, we had a group of S2 pupils out at St Andrews University taking part in the First Chances programme. This programme is designed to support young people who may be the first in their family to go to university. Our thanks to Mr Dick for organising and supporting this.

On Wednesday, we welcomed families and young people of our prospective S1s for Aug 2023/24 at the P7 Open Evening. Families and young people were given a tour of the school and were given a flavour of what KHS is about with drop-ins in subject areas. Thank you to all staff involved in organising and supporting the event. Special thanks to all families and young people who attended.

This week, we also held year group assemblies, re-focussing young people on the values and expectations of KHS. It is important to reflect on our core value of respect for self, others and learning. These values underpin our aim to be a happy, inclusive and successful school.

As ever, Mrs Whyte has asked me to share the following with you for DYW:

Many of our young people benefit from completing work experience in our local community prior to leaving school to ensure they are prepared for the world of work, and we can support them with this. We are looking for local businesses and employers to help with these placements and so would ask if you think you or your employer could help us; please contact us or give Steph Whyte a call at the school.

Lastly, I will send a groupcall to all parents / carers with a number of attachments that I have been asked to share with you, from information on how to share your views around education as part of the Scottish Governments National discussion on Education to Fife festival of Music – Family funday and everything inbetween. This will be in your e-mail by Monday lunchtime.

The week ahead…

Next week, we will have house assemblies focussing on Remembrance.

We look forward to welcoming parents / carers of young people in S2 at the S2 Parents’ Evening.

Further ahead, the next Parent Council will take place online, on Tuesday 22nd November 2022 at 6pm. Agenda and link will be sent on Friday 18th November.

I look forward to working with you again throughout this term.

Best wishes

Chris McKay
