Our Week, Our School 12/06/26

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based events and information.

The week that’s been…

What a busy week it has been here at KHS! Lots to share with you below…

Last Friday, a group of young people and staff went along the Adam Smith Centre to hear from the Governor of the Bank of England, Gordon Brown and others marking the 250th Anniversary of Adam Smith. A good time was had by all!

On Monday, our S6 buddies were put through their paces with some training ahead of the P7 transition visits next week. They were supported by members of our Guidance team in understanding the role and what to expect. Another great turnout from a very keen and enthusiastic S6! Well done to all and I am sure you will be amazing next week.

On Tuesday, our amazing ‘Haggis Hoppers’ were out in the community in the Victoria Hospital, playing jigs, reels, waltzes and songs to patients and staff as well as friends and family of KHS. Well done to all who took part and a massive thanks to the staff who made this possible – Mrs Duckett, Dr Murray, Mr Wilkie, Mr Knussen and Mr Young who drove the minibus to get all the equipment there!

On Wednesday we welcomed our new S1 families to share some important information about our school, the transition days next week and what to expect in August. Families got the opportunity to hear from their child(ren)’s guidance teacher and ask any questions before the visits. It was great to see such a large turnout. A huge thank you to everyone who attended as well as those who led the sessions.

On Thursday, learners in our SEP had a great time on their ‘Big Day Out’ visiting the Deer Centre. Although the weather was a bit mixed, all enjoyed their time out of school. Thank you to all staff who organised and supported the day.

We also said a farewell to our outgoing S6 as they ‘slayed’ their way to their S6 Prom. Everyone had a great evening and enjoyed a well organised event. A massive thanks to Mr Sadnerson and all staff who helped organise and support this event.

Today, many young people took part in Sports Day, supported by our fantastic PE department. The weather held out and our young people gave their all in each event. Well done to all who took part and a huge thank you to all our staff who organised and supported this.

Over the course of the week, pupils from Balwearie High School joined our S3-S6 pupils to undergo See Me, See Change training, to help support better mental health, and better understanding of mental health, across our school communities. We are excited to see how they will take this forward and build on the success of last session’s S6.

From next week, the boys toilets in the maths department will be undergoing some major renovation work and will be closed until the new term. There are several unisex toilets that can be accessed in the building, and the outside quad toilets will also be open for use. We apologise for any inconvenience, but the work is needed and will take around 10 weeks to complete.

Lastly, there has been an increase in the number of learners wearing crocs to school as well as some young people wearing crop tops or tucking there shirt / jumper up to have this appearance. I would ask all parents / carers to remind their child(ren) about our uniform policy and ensure that this is followed at all times.

The week ahead…

Next week is one of our busiest in the school calendar.

On Monday, the FoKHS AGM takes place, Tuesday we have our annual prizegiving and on Wednesday and Thursday we are joined by our new S1s for their transition days. This along with all the usual learning and events taking place in school.

On Friday, we are offering our learners and staff the opportunity to wear something Scottish / blue in preparation for Scotland’s world cup game against Morocco. They can wear a t-shirt, Scotland football top, a kilt, thistle etc. Just keep it school appropriate!

As we near the end of term, we would ask you to consider joining our Parent Council – Parents and Carers of Kirkcaldy High School – PACK. Please see the flyer for more information. Next meeting will be in September.

Enjoy the weekend when it comes!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
