Our Week, Our School 07/11/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based events and information.

The week that’s been…

Another stellar week here at KHS with lots of great learning taking place in and out of the classroom.

On Monday, we hosted the regional final of the Raytheon Quadcopter challenge. We had two teams in the regional final, with teams from Levenmouth and west Lothian too. It was an amazing event and fantastic opportunity to get involved in real groundbreaking engineering and delivery. Well done to everyone that was involved from KHS and the other schools. A massive congratulations to one of our teams who won the regional final and are now in the grand final in London, taking place on 25th November 2025. We can’t wait to hear how they get on. Huge thank you to Ms Barclay for her support to the teams and organising the event in KHS.

On Tuesday, all learners in S1 – S6 took part in an interactive assembly launching our KHS Learning Standard with learners. The assembly was led by our S3 Learning Ambassadors, supported by Mrs Duckett (PT Continuous Improvement (L&T)). After being enthused by Mrs Duckett’s rallying cry, our S3 Learning Ambassador’s led each year group through the Learning Standard, sharing how this was developed from our young people and should help to support our continued drive for excellence in the classroom. Learners were able to interact with their iPads and share their views as we went through the assembly. Well done to all, especially our S3 Learning Ambassadors and Mrs Duckett!

As part of the assembly, learners were also asked if they wished to be involved in reviewing our anti-bullying policy by scanning a QR code. In addition, learners in S2, S4 and S5 were given an overview of the mock course choice process, with key information shared. This followed the online family event last week.

Wednesday, we welcomed families of our S1’s to KHS for their first Parent / Carer evening. It was fantastic to see so many families in attendance and was great to get an opportunity to talk to many as you made your way through the various accommodations. It was lovely to hear how positive families were about the feedback received, the views of their child(ren) being sought and the clear next steps in place. Well done to the whole S1 for settling in so well to life at KHS!

On Wednesday, we also received notice from HMIE that our school will be inspected on w/b 24th November 2025. We are really looking forward to sharing our shared journey over the past 3 years and the improvements that we have shared with you through various communications. I would strongly encourage you to complete the parent / carer survey which can be found in the letter.

Today, I met with our Pupil Leadership Team for our usual termly chat about life in KHS, what’s going well, and what we need to improve. Our Pupil Leadership Team outlined that they felt school was calm and settled following our return last week. They spoke positively about their learning experiences in class, highlighting an increase in feedback from teachers that is helping support their continued learning. They outlined the different supports on offer for all young people across the school and were keen to highlight the importance our values of Community, Ambition, Respect have on their day-to-day life and work in school.

As ever, if you want to read more about what is happening here at KHS, please follow our blog.

A wee update from Mrs Stewart and our supported learners:

“This week in History we have been looking at more in-depth aspects of the lives of our chosen historic figures, William Wallace and Robert the Bruce and the importance of their existence in Scottish history and culture. We are investigating important events in their timeline and the impact on how Scotland was shaped as a country.

In Art we have been investigating, discovering and selecting artist whose work we are drawn to, to create a study on their art style. Steven Brown and his cows have been a favourite.

In Health and wellbeing, we are expanding on our understanding of our own mindset and reflecting with the help and support of our peers on what strategies we can use to support a more positive approach to our own mindset.

In Game design we have designed some of the characters and bord designs for our new board game as well as working collectively to develop a name for the game also. This took a huge amount of collaboration and team work to achieve this. Well done team.

We have begun some assessments in our N2 and N3 maths groups and our seniors are continuing to achieve and complete another N4 Assessment and have begun working hard on the next unit.

In PSE we are discussing internet safety and online scams we need to be aware of to keep ourselves protected.

S1, P.E we are looking at how to move our bodies and keep mobile helps us keeps us fit and healthy.

Our trade hub heroes continue to learn new skills and develop their sense of the world of work through this amazing opportunity, well done everyone.

College full day is now in full swing with everyone loving the new experiences, especially the non-uniform time. Making new friends and developing their independence, growing in confidence every time they go. Well done!”

Rights Respecting Schools Book Sale: Article 28: Right to Education

Members of the Rights Respecting Schools group have been planning a book fair and book drive in order to try and support young people in having the opportunity to read for learning but also for enjoyment!

From the 10th of November – 14th of November we will be looking for book donations. All types of books welcome!

Please bring donations to the library or your Social Subjects class or drop them in to the library. It’s a good chance to clear some space in your house as well!

Once all the donations are in, we will set a date and time for the book fair. So please keep your eye out on the blue bulletin board and or your emails!

Thanks, the Rights Respecting Schools Group.

Please find a leaflet about drug awareness workshops. There is a QR on the flyer should you wish to sign up.

The week ahead…

Next week, learning continues in classes, and we have the annual KHS Learning Fair taking place on Wednesday 12th November 2025 12pm – 5pm. Please find a flyer with more information.

Finally, the next PACK (Parent / Carer Council) meeting will take place on Tuesday 18th November 2025 at 6.30pm on TEAMS. I will share the agenda and a link with you next week.
