Dear Parent / Carer,
Welcome to our weekly family and community communication that provides a Headteacher overview of the weeks events and other school-based events and information. This replaces the weekly ‘Rector’s Log’. Moving forward, this information will be shared in a different format tbc.
The week that’s been…
It has been an exhausting first week back and I am blaming the change of clocks, weather and Halloween for that!
It was great to welcome all our young people and staff back after the October break. School has been very busy this week and will be even more so as we move into November and term 2.
This week learners have returned to their learning, utilising and using the iPads across many lessons. Speaking to our young people, they are positive about the use of technology and the impact it is having on their learning, and I have had the opportunity to see and hear across a range of subjects and year groups.
Yesterday and today and I have been around school, in and out of classes and interacting with our community. We are very proud of all our young people, and every interaction has been positive and focussed. Well done to all.
Yesterday, S4 were part of a play called ‘I love you mum – I promise I won’t die’ aimed at educating young people about the dangers of taking drugs. The 1-hour play was followed by a 30-minute drug education workshop. A hard hitting, but very important social education event. Please see the flyer about Drug awareness workshops for parents / carers.
Today, our Executive Director of Education, Donnie Macleod came to KHS for his first formal visit. Mr Macleod was taken on a tour of the school by our pupil leadership team, followed by discussions about our school, Fife and national policy. It was a pleasure to welcome Mr Macleod to KHS and we are privileged that he spent time with us.
As ever, if you want to read more about what is happening here at KHS, please follow our blog.
A wee update from Mrs Stewart and our supported learners:
“We have loved seeing many smiling faces return to us after the October holidays. We hope families as well as pupils are feeling refreshed.
The Scottish Fire Service visited us on Tuesday to support us with our learning about Fire Safety. We are looking forward to working with them more throughout the year.
SLD1 and 2 will be working on both Money and Shape this term. In SLD1 we have been matching, identifying and ordering coins and thinking of examples of when we use them in our lives. SLD2 have started calculating and making the same amount using different combinations of coins and notes. We have also set up a shop in which to practice our skills. Our shape work this week included spooky symmetrical shapes – photos to follow on Socials.
Following the visit from the Fire Brigade we have created an in-house rescue service where we can use our imagination and think about how we keep ourselves and others safe, the people that help us and how we can make 999 calls. We have kindly been leant fire safety equipment and are enjoying role playing with these.
Our S3 class will be continuing their learning on Global Development Goals this term. This term they are focusing on ‘Life on Land.’
Our Seniors settled well into college again this term. They are now full time every Thursday. ”
Date for diaries: Thursday 11th December, 2.00pm. SLD Christmas Open Afternoon
Following the launch of our updated Positive Relationships / Celebrating success policies last term, we will be launching a new payback consequence system to support continued improvement. Mrs Gibb has shared this information with parents / carers. This will be operated by SLT / PTCs / PTs and will provide space for reflection and supporting positive choices.
Finally, for families with learners in S4-6, SQA have launched the ‘Your National Qualifications’ guide outlining all the different qualifications and links to help and support. You can access this by following the link:.
The week ahead…
Next week we have a range of events on in school from the Quadcopter regional finals on Monday, the launch of our co-created Learning Standard with our learners through assemblies on Tuesday followed by S1 Parent / Carer evening on Wednesday and finally the annual FoKHS Race Night on Friday. It’s a hold on to your hat kind of week!
I hope you have a ‘spooktacular’ weekend when it comes!
Best wishes,
Chris McKay
