Rector’s Log 19/09/25

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are doing well!

The week that’s been…

It has been non-stop this week with lots going on for KHS and learners!

On Monday and Tuesday, we had colleagues from other schools and the central education team support our school improvement by visiting and taking part in a range of activities including lesson observations, meeting with families, young people and staff and reviewing an array of evidence around our improvement journey. The team then provided feedback about what was going well, further developments needed and actions. Feedback included:

Our young people, staff and families have a real sense of pride in the school and community, with positive relationships clear across most of the school and interactions

Young people shared how supported they feel by staff, with recognition of the support offered over and above what happens during the school day

Clear areas of improvement including within curriculum, partnership working, support and well-being leading to better opportunities and a safer and more productive learning environment

Partners were very enthusiastic about their experience across the school, they felt valued, empowered and supported

The team felt the school was very calm, young people were respectful and that the standard of uniform was very high leading to a feeling of a school working together

The ELP team felt that the school team are fully committed and working to improve opportunities and outcomes for all young people – from cohorts to individuals

A huge well done to everyone involved and thank you to those who supported by attending meetings or sharing views online.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, our young people were part of Fife’s commitment to Transform Learning with the roll-out and deployment of iPads to all young people. There was certainly a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere in the hall as learners received their iPads and were taken through the basics by the Transforming Learning team. Even although the iPads were only deployed on these days, across the week I have been in and out of many classes as the iPads were getting put to good use within most subjects and classes. A huge well done to Mrs Hamilton, Ms Samfat and the digital learning team for all their work in organising and supporting this. We were also commended for having decorations and balloons to make it feel like a special occasion – huge thanks to Mrs Duckett for this!

Today, colleagues from across all Kirkcaldy High Schools took part in professional learning, working in subject teams across all 4 schools looking at moderation across BGE (S1-3).

A wee update from Mrs Stewart and our supported learners:

We have had a very exciting week in SLD as we have been given our iPads.  We have set up our Showbie accounts and have started to use the various learning Apps available to us.

Teachers are hoping that everyone will remember to charge their iPads at home and will bring them to school each day as they will be used in most lessons.

As ever, if you want to read more about what is happening here at KHS, please follow our blog.

In addition, please read about Melanie Ward’s (MP) experience of her visit to KHS last Friday.

Well done to all young people and staff involved in this.

The week ahead…

Next week, we have S4 Parent / Carer evening taking place on Tuesday evening here at KHS.

I will also be sharing and asking for your views on our school improvement priorities for this session.

Advance notice – The FoKHS Race Night takes place here in KHS on Friday 7th November 2025. Please see the flyer for more information.

I hope you have a great weekend when it comes!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
