Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log. I hope you and your family are keeping well!
The week that’s been…
It has been another busy week in KHS with lots going on.
Last Friday, FOKHS held their annual Race Night in our school hall. It was a fantastic night, well attended and supported. The night managed to raise over £2,200 between ticket sales and all sales on the evening. A huge thank you to FoKHS and everyone who supported this event.
On Monday, we held our annual Remembrance assemblies in the hall. Our young people were a real credit to you and our community in terms of their respect and understanding of this occasion. Many of our young people were involved in many ways – speaking, playing instruments, part of the background team etc. If you haven’t already, please check out the assembly (and other happenings at KHS) on our website and blog. Huge thanks to Mrs Harrower, Dr Murray, Mr Wilkie, Mrs Duckett and all the staff and young people who helped to mark this day.
Over the course of this week, we have had a small group of S2/3 young people take part in the ‘Best of You’ programme. The programme’s aim is to support young people understand and bring out their potential. The programme focusses on young people understanding about their own emotions, how this impacts them and others. It also provides scaffolding in how to achieve the very best with the talents they have. This is run by Mark Brown who is the namesake of his company Mark Brown programmes. This is the 4th cohort of young people who have undertaken the programme, and many continue to use the strategies and supports. Well done to all graduates!
Here’s an update from Mrs. Black in Supported Learning!
A shorter week for our pupils with the in-service day but busy as always. Please see the photos we have shared of work from our RMPS superstars Jake, Logan and Anish in SLD3; learning with Mrs Gauffre about Justice systems they have charted average prison sentences in different countries. Great work and fabulous discussions and insights, well done.
We have a number of learners working in the Home Economics department and they always come up to share their work and often offer a wee something to try. This week they’ve shared pancakes, ciabatta breads, truffles, cupcakes and fudge and with much consideration we all agree you’re doing great work, it all tastes amazing. Thank you to the kind students in SLD1, 3 and 5 for sharing.
We were all smiling this week to hear of the birth of baby girl Dowie and wish Mrs Dowie and her family lots of love, congratulations. A big welcome to Miss Thompson who joins us to cover maternity leave, we are delighted to have you join us.
Congratulations to Nathan of SLD2 for his swim at the Scottish Championships. This was Nathan’s first National gala and he was really proud of his swims. We are proud of you Nathan.
Yesterday, our Travel and Tourism class held a non-uniform day in aid of Children in Need. It was a well-supported event across the school, and we look forward to finding out the total amount raised to support this worthwhile cause.
House Point totals for the week and session so far are as below:
This weeks total:
Adam Smith – 94

Finally, we always seek your help in understanding what you feel is working well at KHS and what we could do to improve. At our Parent / Carer Forum on Tuesday, we were discussing areas around Curriculum Rationale and our tracking reports. Over the rest of this session, we will be looking to hear your views on how we can continue to improve key, targeted areas. Support us, I would ask you to complete our general survey by clicking on this form.
The week ahead…
It is a very busy week ahead with lots on in school. We have the Careers Fair taking place in KHS on Tuesday, with young people attending during school and an opportunity for parents / carers to attend with their child(ren) after school until 6pm.
We also have the speedy STEM event taking place on Wednesday morning. This is for S3 and will give all an opportunity to meet with and chat to many people involved in STEM disciplines.
Finally, we have our P7 open evening where families from our prospective new pupils can come into KHS and can visit classrooms and meet some of our amazing teachers, staff and young people!
I hope you have a great weekend when it comes.
Best wishes,
Chris McKay
