Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 30/08/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log.

The week that’s been…

It has been great to have our first full pupil week under our belts. As ever there is lots going on and the school never stands still!

On Monday, learners in S5 and S6 who are looking to go to University had the opportunity to hear from colleagues at Abertay University about UCAS and the process for the year. We also had our first collegiate session focussed on how we can best support Young Carers here at KHS.

Over the course of this week, young people in S4-6 have started some great opportunities with Fife Council and Fife College. We had around 15 young people visiting Fife Council Building services, listening to the opportunities that exist and taking part in some practical activities. We also had a number of young people taking part in new courses at Fife College in Construction and Hair and Beauty. These are courses specifically set up for KHS students in S4 and supporting their next steps in education. Lastly, we also had a number of young people going to the trade hub, undertaking courses in Hospitality and Construction. These are fantastic opportunities and it is great to see our new Curriculum and school day facilitating this for our learners.

Today, we held our first fire drill of the new session with our new S1s and new colleagues supporting a very well organised evacuation. Well done to all for their support. Our new S1s continue to get to know KHS and continue to impress in their attitude and application. Next week will be their first proper week without any adjustments and we wish them well as they align with the rest of the learner body.

As ever, you can keep up to date with all the latest news and events on our school website and blog.

We continue to work with school transport about the timings of our school buses. The bus companies are looking at this and may review timings as required. I will keep you updated as I know more. Please continue to support us by ensuring that those who travel to school independently, leave in plenty of time and arrive to class on time. Your support with this is greatly appreciated.

The week ahead…

Next week, we continue with our learning on what is a very short term. Young people in S3, S5/6 should now have their timetable confirmed and no more changes are expected.

I hope you and your family have a pleasant weekend.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
