Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 14/06/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

What a week it has been! The week has flown past but lots of incredible events taking place.

On Monday, Friends of Kirkcaldy High School (FoKHS) held their annual general meeting on Zoom. At the meeting, we covered an overview of activity over the year, next steps and discussed some school bids for funding. I am grateful to FoKHS for agreeing to donate over £3400 towards supporting school-based activities for our young people including First Aid courses, equipment for our new School of Dance and dance club and equipment for our new Radio course in S3. FoKHS continue to support our young people through funding, fundraising activities, time and much more. Thank you!

On Tuesday, we held our annual prizegiving event in a much cooler climate than last year! Our young people were celebrated for a range of achievements from academic and sporting success, through to their own character development, community support / volunteering and much more. Throughout the night, we were also treated to a range of musical performances from our amazing young people. Well done to all for their achievements and to our team here who worked tirelessly to pull off another amazing event.

On Wednesday and Thursday, we welcomed our new S1 cohort into KHS. Our S1 learners were an absolute pleasure and were supported by our equal fantastic Prefects and buddies. They spent time following their timetable, taking part in some sporting and well-being activities as well as coming together as a group and listening to some key messages from Mrs Gibb. All our S1s and S6s were shattered by the end of Thursday.

Our S1s and families were also invited to an information evening on Thursday where we shared important information about KHS and what the first few days of school will look like for learners in August. Families also got the opportunity to hear from our Guidance team about what support is offered to learners and their role in supporting their child over the coming weeks and years. A massive well done and thank you to everyone involved.

Next, an update from Ms Black and our Supported Learning department:

“In Supported Learning, after our own period of transition, we are now fully working with our new class teachers and settled into our new rooms and moving onto our new timetables. Great to see everyone settled and engaged in their learning.

Along with the rest of the school we have had our P7/S1 learners visit for their two full transition days. They followed their S1 timetables and as well as learning in the department they went out to Music, Social Subjects and Science to get a really good experience of what it will be like from August. They have been coming in for transition visits all term and beyond and are raring to go.

Our transition days were a day ahead of the rest of the school as Supported Learning joined some other local schools for the Rotary Club’s Big Day Out at the Deer Centre in Cupar. We had a fantastic day learning about the animals, playing on the very popular go karts and meeting our friends from other enhanced support provisions. As always, our kids were a credit to the school and a delight to see their smiley faces. Check them out on KHS’ social media – Facebook, and Twitter

As ever, please check on our blog to keep up to date with all the latest goings on and celebrate the success of our young people too – athletics, STEM, mock elections and much more.

The week ahead…

Next week brings us back to a sense of normality with a much quieter week on the calendar. It is the second last week of term and our learners will continue with their courses and studies. Young people will attend house assemblies next week also.

A reminder that next week will be the last Rector’s log of the session. I will issue an end of session letter, our Standards and Quality Report, achievement summary, School Improvement Plan and summary and Pupil Equity Fund Plans on the last week of term for consultation.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend when it comes (and perhaps celebrating some Scottish success later!).

Best wishes,

Chris McKay

Rector
