Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 31/05/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

The weeks are fairly flying past and another busy week has just past.

Over the past couple of weeks, we have had young people from our associated and non-associated primaries visiting and taking part in an enhanced transition programme. Through this programme, they have been able to build positive relationships with key adults here at KHS, build up their confidence in the new school environment and have the opportunity to take part in a range of different activities, in and out of class. A huge thank you to everyone involved in organising and supporting this. We can’t wait to see them for our 2 transition days in a couple of weeks.

Yesterday and today we welcomed back our new S5 and S6 as they undertook their induction days. The days were filled with information and activities to support our young people as they progress to and through the Senior school. It was fantastic to see everyone return and in such good spirits. Thank you to Mrs Sim, Mrs Davidson, the Guidance team and our House Leaders who supported in organising and running these days.

Today, we are a pleased to announce that Katelyn Wotherspoon and Deacon Eskar have been announced as our new Head Girl and Head Boy. Congratulations to both and to the wider Senior leadership team who were also announced today.

In SLD this week:

“P7/S1 transition has been every Friday afternoon this term and it is a privilege getting to know our new learners. This week they also visited for two mornings to experience more of what a school day will look like for them here. We are super proud of the way they are settling in and getting to know adults and other pupils and we can’t wait to see you back every Friday and then your two full days. Also, super proud of our current S1s and up who are supporting them and sharing a little about life and learning in our school. It’s lovely to see relationships being fostered and their positivity being shared.

We are about to go into a week of transition, 4 days with the holiday Monday, for the rest of the department and your young person will be able to share more about that plan. They will also come home with a note about their new teacher and class and as always. An extra well done to our Seniors who have been through S5 and S6 induction as well. As always, we will support ourselves through these changes.”

As ever, please check on our blog to keep up to date with all the latest goings on and celebrate the success of our young people too including S4 Lift off programme with Abertay University, S3 Set for Success program, staff and young people taking part in BBC’s Debate Night and our support and involvement in anniversary events to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

In staffing news, Hayley Low, currently PTC Maths at Viewforth, was successful at interview for our PTC Mathematics post. Hayley will start with us in August and brings experience as well as a track record in supporting young people to achieve their potential in Mathematics and Numeracy. We look forward to Hayley starting with us. In other staffing news, we are well underway in our recruitment for next session and I will provide an update on this over the next few weeks.

A survey to share for you to provide your voice on changes in and out of school…

As we continue to develop our School Improvement Plan for next session, one of our key priorities is continuing to improve the learning experience for young people here at KHS. We are seeking your views on this. If you have some time, please complete the survey.

Lastly, with the change of year groups next week, check out our updated Key Information. This will be updated next session to take account of the new school day, but I hope this is helpful over the next few weeks.

The week ahead…

Next week, our school timetable moves on and young people move up a year group with S1 becoming new S2 and so on. Young people have been issued with their timetables today and should go straight to tutor on Tuesday. If they were off, they can get their new timetable in their tutor class.

A reminder that Monday, 3rd June is a local holiday and school will be closed. School will re-open on Tuesday 4th June.

There are some additional attachments, that I have been asked to share with you…

I hope you enjoy the weekend!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
