Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 17/05/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

This week, we had a full week here at KHS, with no holidays, INSETs or burst water mains! This meant that young people could continue with all of the amazing opportunities on offer, SQA exams and core learning and teaching.

This week, our S4-6 learners continued with their SQA examinations, with Mathematics (Higher and Advanced Higher) and Applications of Mathematics (National 5) taking place on Monday, with Politics, Biology and Human Biology, Graph Comm and Engineering Science all taking place this week. Our young people continue to keep a smile on their face and take each challenge in their stride. Well done to all.

On Tuesday, we held our final Parent / Carer Council of the session, discussing many issues and electing a new Parent / Carer council Chair. You can read the minutes.

Today, we held our Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) final, with groups from S3 presenting to charities, judges, classmates and YPI about work they had undertaken with local charities to get to know what they do, why they are important and to develop their own philanthropic values and skills. The winning group represented FIRST for Fife who provide a community-based rehabilitation service to individuals in Fife with drug or alcohol issues. The winning group showed a clear commitment to their charity and a clear passion for delivering change around this complex social issue. YPI have provided £3000 of funding to support this charity as a result. Well done to the winning group and all groups who took part in YPI. Thank you to all staff who supported our learners too.

Ms Black has provided a little update from SLD…

“It’s been a very busy week in Supported Learning with final qualifications being achieved and Nat 5 exams being revised for.

SLD1 and 2 have been working together on a piece of work around SHANARRI indicators and what this means to them. SLD2 finished their smart device holders this week and I am sure you’ll agree they are skilled joiners. SLD3 and 4 have spent a lot of time finishing work for qualifications. Across the department we have a lot of sport with Raith Rovers sessions, curling, boccia and running groups going on. Next week we have teams out representing us at the inter-departmental sports league and Fife Cross Country, I look forward to sharing how we get on.”

As ever, please check on our blog to keep up to date with all the latest goings on and celebrate the success of our young people too, with news on First Chances and on our young people who are on a Sailing adventure on board the Excelsior.

Lastly, we are aware that the temperature has been increasing over the last week or so. Heating in school has been switched off and rooms have windows open, with some rooms using fans to help keep everyone cool. I would ask that young people continue to wear appropriate uniform, as outlined in our policy. Young people should not be wearing shorts to school, and must ensure they change after P.E. Moreover, we would continue to ask for your support in ensuring young people attend school. There has been a little dip after last week. As ever, I appreciate your support to ensure young people attend school and that they are comfortable and safe at school.

The week ahead…

Next week, the SQA examinations continue and we have young people from P7 joining us for some extended transition days and events.

Please look out for a letter outlining details around the change of timetable in June and the new school day from August next week.

I hope you enjoy the weekend!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
