Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

It has been a very quick week here at KHS with a variety of events and learning taking place.

On Monday, it was great to see all our young people return and get back in to school life. We held assemblies with young people in S4-6, related to the upcoming SQA examinations and handed out SQA exam guidance booklets. We wish all young people the very best of luck for the upcoming examinations. Mrs Davidson has sent out a masterclass timetable for young people who have examinations also. Lastly, please find attached a letter from Maria Lloyd, Head of Secondary schools wishing young people well and signposting to various supports.

On Tuesday – Thursday we had House assemblies, led by our S6 leavers. These assemblies provided an opportunity for our S6s to share what KHS has meant to them and to pass the torch on to others within their houses. A huge well done to the leavers for organising and leading these assemblies. A big thank you to our guidance teachers and house leaders for helping to support also.

On Wednesday, we had a visitor from the Rights Respecting School Award body. They were in school for a full morning, taking part in a range of activities and putting our young people, families, partners and staff through their paces as we seek re-accreditation for our Gold award. We will not know the outcome until later in the year, but the assessor was very impressed with our community and that there was a strong sense that Children’s rights were embedded and at the heart of our school. Well done to all involved and watch this space for news about our re-accreditation.

Today, we held leavers activities for our S6 who will leave KHS at the end of the SQA examinations. This is always a bittersweet moment as we wish all well in the next phase of life, but we will miss them. We are very proud of the people they have become and know that they will move on to amazing things. It was great to speak with them, sign shirts and year books and listen to the many stories from their time at KHS. We wish them every success in the future.

We also held an Eid party in celebration of this great festival. With some amazing food and great company, it was a fantastic occasion to celebrate as a community. We had a number of young people, staff and elected officials attend a very warm and happy Eid. Thank you to Dr Murray for his amazing organisation and to those who supported the decorating, food preparation and attending.

Lastly, some news from Ms Black and our amazing SLD department:

“We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday. Really good to see our young people back at school and we have had a settled and productive start back to our learning. We have been doing work across the department on our Rights and looking at Bullying and really mature discussions and attitudes in all classes.

As part of SLD 2’s Social Wellbeing we have been learning about the cost of living crisis and how families need support. SLD 2 have been researching local charities who help with this crisis. Nourish Support Centre in Kirkcaldy is one of the charities that can help. They offer groups and services for people with additional support needs and do great work in the community. Our pupils have been enjoying spending time at Nourish building Lego and getting to know the staff. The pupils have also been enjoying treats from Greggs.

Our big news for the week and we are very proud to announce that two of our seniors have been selected as Prefects. You are both great role models and positive influences and we know you will bring great qualities to the Prefect Team. Well done Abbi and Levi!”

The week ahead…

Next week the SQA examinations begin, with a range of subjects. We also have masterclasses running throughout the week. If any young person wishes to study in school, they should follow their normal timetabled classes.

We have interviews taking place for our re-advertised PT Guidance post on Wednesday and I look forward to updating you on the successful candidate next week.
