Rector’s Log 22/03/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well. This is the last Rector’s log of the term.

The week that’s been…

The second last week of term is always a busy time with various events, completion of courses, assessments and everyone looking forward to a well-earned break! It has been very busy here and we look forward to finishing on a high next week.

Over the past week, young people continue to give their best in all aspects of school life. Our young people are working hard in preparation for the next steps in their learning, whether that’s SQA assessments, or ensuring they get the best end to the term, working hard in and out of class.

It has been noticeable that our attendance is starting to dip, prior to the break. I would encourage you to send your child to school so that they can continue their learning. We will continue to ensure that young people are learning through until we finish next Thursday.

Over the past few weeks, we have had reports of unofficial KHS sites being set up on Social Media, TikTok in particular. We have been in contact with the company and I am pleased to say that they have taken these sites off of their app / site. Should you become aware of any malicious or unofficial sites, please alert us and we will work with the relevant people to ensure these are taken down. Thank you to Mrs Duckett for her support with this.

A little update from Ms Black and Supported Learning:

“The 18th - 24th March is Sign Language week to celebrate and promote British Sign Language.  We have been learning and using our BSL across the department this week including all taking part in a lesson with learners across the UK.  It  has been great to see learners using BSL through their day and I will share some photos on Twitter.  We look forward to learning about and celebrating days that are really important to our community, we would welcome hearing about those that are important to you.

One of learners asked Mr Broadway if he would dye his beard if we raised money for Comic Relief.  Thank you so much to all staff and young people that donated, we have raised £551.32!  There were a few red noses but only one bright red beard!  Thank you all.”

We finish for the term next Thursday at 3.15pm and we look forward to 4 more days of learning before the Spring holidays.

As ever, please check out our blog to keep up to date with all the latest goings on and celebrate the success of our young people too.

Some staffing news for you now…I am pleased to say that Mr Caldwell (Business), Ms Springhall (Maths) and Ms Akers (HE) have all been successful in gaining a permanent post here at KHS for next session. All are current probationers and will complete their standard for full registration in the coming weeks.

Moreover, congratulations to Mr Walsh (Business) who was successful at interview for acting Principal Teacher Guidance. Mr Walsh is due to start this post on 29th April, covering for Mrs Donaldson who will be going off on maternity leave.

We also held interviews for the post of permanent PT Guidance following Mrs Thompson’s permanent move to PTC English. Unfortunately, we were unable to appoint anyone. The post is re-advertised and interviews will take place after the Easter break.

Lastly, the timetable for our Easter Study programme is available for young people in S4-6. I would encourage all young people who are due to undertake their SQA assessments to attend, where they can.

Moreover, there is a free on-line study support programme for S4-6 being run by e-Sgoil during the Easter holidays (information attached). Follow this link for more information and to sign up. Young people must sign up through Glow.

The week ahead…

Next week is the last week of term with school closing on Thursday 28th March 2024 at 3.15pm for pupils. School will reopen on Monday 15th April 2024 at the usual time.

On Thursday, we will have our termly ‘Dress Down day’ in aid of Comic Relief. If pupils can and wish to donate to this, they will be able to do so at tutor.

Currently, teachers are completing S4-6 tracking reports, including final levels and estimates, with a deadline of next Thursday. These will be sent to parents / carers either during or just after the Easter break, following our quality assurance processes.

Finally, I want to thank all of our community for their help, support, passion and all-round amazingness over this term. It has been extremely busy but also mighty productive.

I do hope your child(ren) and you get a well-earned rest over the break.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
