Rector’s Log 12/01/24

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log and first of 2024! I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

It’s been a very quick week here at KHS and it’s been a delight to have all our young people back for the first full week following the festive break. Our young people continue to work hard and give of their best every day.

Over the past week, I have been around the school and visited most classes / year groups. On Wednesday, I visited S1 classes with Mrs Gibb (DHT and S1 Year Head). Classes were settled and our S1 were actively taking part in the many lessons and activities.

Also, on Wednesday, our senior pupils who are applying to university were invited along to the third lift off session of the year. The programme offers support and gives young people the opportunity to plan for their next steps after school.

On Thursday, we had a group of S1s attend St Andrews University as part of the first chances programme. I had the opportunity to speak to some as they arrived back in school and they were very positive about the experience and visit. More information about this can be found on our school website – S1 First Chances

As I mentioned last week, we are about to start a formal consultation with our community on our curriculum and school day. All information will be shared with our community on Monday and the consultation will last 3 weeks. There will be opportunities for our community to feedback which will be shared with you. Please read the letter from Shelagh McLean (Head of Education and Children’s Services) about equity of hours for all secondary schools across Fife and the work undertaken within the Kirkcaldy locality.

The week ahead…

On Tuesday, the next meeting of our Parent / Carer council takes place at 6pm online. Agenda and link to the meeting have been shared with the Rector’s log.

On Thursday, we hold our annual pathways evening for families and young people in S2, S4 and S5. There will be an opportunity for families to here about the process and then visit the various subject and faculty stalls to get more information about the subjects and qualifications on offer.

We will have partners from Fife College, Edinburgh Napier University and Skills Development Scotland on hand to offer further guidance and support, as well as our own Guidance team. Information has been shared with families of the relevant year groups. The evening starts at 5pm for S2 families and 6pm for families of S4 and S5.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
