Rector’s Log 17/11/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

It’s been a very busy week here at KHS, with lots going on in and out of the classroom.

On Monday, we welcomed our prospective S1s for session 2024/25 along with their families to KHS. It was an extremely busy evening with families and young people visiting many faculties across the school, experiencing the wonders and joys of the various subjects. It was a fantastic evening and we were pleased to meet everyone. We look forward to future transition events and continued working with young people and families. Thank you to Mrs Gibb, our young people who led each group and all of the staff who helped to support the evening.

Young people in S2, S4 and S5 also took part in our course choice assemblies on Monday and Tuesday this week. Led by Mrs Hamilton (DHT Curriculum), these assemblies are designed to support young people with the process of choosing their options for next session. Mrs Hamilton shared a range of information and key dates with the young people and we had input from St Andrew’s University REACH team for anyone looking to move into medicine and related fields. Young people will be undertaking their Mock course choices over the next couple of weeks. This helps us to prepare for next session, ensuring that courses are viable and support planning for staffing and partnership working.

Linked to this, a wee reminder that we sent out our curriculum change proposals to you last week and asked for your feedback. You can review the proposals,  and I would ask for your feedback using our on-line form. Thank you to those parents / carers who have already submitted their response. Moreover, thank you to Parent Council for the opportunity to speak about the proposals, rationale for change and what we hope to improve by making the changes.

On Tuesday we held our second Parent Council meeting. We heard from our Head Boy about all things KHS and what has been happening from our young people’s perspective, talked about the course choice process and discussed the proposed curriculum changes noted above. As ever, it is a great opportunity to be involved in the life of KHS and have a voice in how we take forward our school. You can read the minutes of this meeting.

On Wednesday, we had a group of young people head off to St Andrew’s University to take part in the First Chances programme. The programme offers young people an opportunity to understand what’s involved in University education, support those who wish to take this route and help young people to develop a number of key skills that will support them going forward.

Today, young people across KHS have been supporting Children in Need. Young people have donated to support this cause and take part in the dress down day. Some were more physical, taking part in other challenges. Well done to all for a fantastic day in support of a very worthwhile cause!

Lastly, please check out our ‘Latest News’ section on the website for all the up to date information and reviews.

The week ahead…

Next week, we look forward to another fantastic evening with the annual Friends of Kirkcaldy High School (FoKHS) race night. This takes place here at KHS on Friday 24th November.

Further ahead, we look forward to welcoming parents / carers of young people in S3 to the S3 Parent / Carer evening on Thursday 30th November.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend when it arrives!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
