Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 10/11/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s log. I hope you and your family are doing well.

The week that’s been…

This week in KHS, we have been focussing on the theme of Remembrance.

On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, we held our yearly Remembrance assemblies. This year, the theme for the assemblies was on Service. We heard from our young people about members of their family who had served in the military and reflected on the sacrifices made. We also held our own Remembrance service at the school War memorial today with our Head Girl and Head Boy laying wreaths after our 2-minute silence. A huge thank you to Mrs Harrower, her team of helpers and the young people who did an amazing job speaking, singing, playing instruments and taking part in these very poignant events.

Over the past few days, I have been meeting with young people across various year groups. We have been discussing a range of things related to their experience in KHS. We have been focussing on our curriculum, what is going well and what improvements we could make in the future. We have also been discussing their views about safety at school and it is great to hear that our young people continue to feel safe and supported every day. Over the remaining term and into next year, more young people will be invited to share their views on a wide variety of issues.

Today was an INSET day here at KHS and our focus was on developing our curriculum as well as continued work around our School Improvement Plan through our improvement groups. We had rich discussion on our current curriculum provision, the evidence and need to change post pandemic and grappling with what this could be going forward. We also took time to support staff well-being through planned activities following lunch.

As part of our School Improvement Plan, we have been reviewing our curriculum offer both in terms of provision and also in planning and support. Over the past year, we have been asking for your views and those of our young people and wider school community to enable us to plan and discuss what needs to change and why. We are now seeking your views about our proposed changes to the curriculum, starting in session 2024/25. We have put together a curriculum discussion paper and will be discussing this at Parent Council on Tuesday. For those not able to attend, please send feedback using our on-line form.

The week ahead…

On Monday, we welcome young people and families to our P7 information evening where they will get a chance to meet staff across the school through varied events.

Our next Parent Council meeting, takes place on Tuesday 14th November at 6pm. This is online. Please contact us for the agenda and meeting link.

I hope you have a fantastic weekend when it arrives!

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
