Rector’s Log 29/09/23

Welcome to this weeks Rectors log, I hope you and your family are doing well…

The week that’s been…

It has been a strange week here at KHS with young people working from home Tuesday – Thursday. The usual noise, busyness and life of our school moved online with remote learning taking place across all year groups.

Whilst we were not able to have young people in KHS over the 3 days, we still had young people going to Fife College, attending a theatre trip and undertaking various out of school activities.

On Monday, young people in S6 undertook training in ‘Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP)’ programme. Young people learned more about supporting peers by taking a bystander approach to issues and supporting their contemporaries to make better, informed choices. The final day of training takes place on Tuesday, 3rd October.

On Wednesday, we had a group of S4 pupils continue their construction course with Fife College at Dunfermline, Halbeath campus. These young people should great dedication by getting to the campus via public transport and undertaking their work as directed. This is the 5th week of the course and it’s fair to say that the young people are enjoying the experience. Special thanks to Jayne Preece, our PSO Positive Destinations, who has supported the group over the term.

On Thursday, we had a group of young people from our senior school attend the theatre production ‘2.22 A Ghost Story’ at the Festival Theatre. A valuable experience for the group and will support their work within their National Qualification Drama course. You can read a review from one of the S4 pupils who attended by clicking here. Thank you to Mr McPherson for organising the experience and to all who attended and supported.

We also had young people continue with their School College Partnership courses at Fife College on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Well done to those who continued to attend even though it was just 2 afternoons when school had moved online!

Mr Dick, our new DYW coordinate has created a page on our website to help promote employment opportunities for young people who are looking to leave school.

Lastly, some staffing news to update you with. Miss Torrens (DET) left KHS last Friday to move to a new, promoted post at Levenmouth Academy. We wish her well in this role.

We have been successful in appointing Mrs Schulz as Teacher of DET to replace Miss Torrens. Mrs Schulz, who is moving from Glenwood High School, is due to start with us on Tuesday 24th October. I am sure she will be a great asset to the young people and KHS.

We also give our best to Ms Brown, from Home Economics, who begins her maternity leave next week. We hope all goes well in the weeks and months ahead and look forward to her return next session.

The week ahead…

This will be the last Rector’s log of the term. I will send all Parents / Carers an end of term letter next week.

Next week we have the first Parent / Carer evening of this session with S4 families welcomed to KHS on Tuesday 3rd October. This is a great opportunity to discuss the recent tracking report with teachers and learn what the next steps are for success for your child. The S6 prom and yearbook committee will also be hosting a bake sale during the evening so bring some spare change and enjoy some home baking too!

N.B. that there are proposed strikes to take place in Fife College – Tuesday and Wednesday next week. If your child attends on these days, please ensure that they don’t go to Fife College and attend school. For those in S5/6, they can study in the library. For those in S4, they can attend regular timetabled classes.

A reminder that school closes next Friday, 6th October at 3.15pm, for young people to end this first term. It has been action packed and past too quickly. School will re-open at the normal time on Monday 23rd October for the start of term 2.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay

Rector
