Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 25/08/23

It has been a very busy, but productive week here at KHS…

The week that’s been…

This was the first full week for all our young people and I think a very tiring one, judging by some of the faces today.

Our S1s continue to get to know the school and our routines, working with their buddies and supporting each other to find their way around. Next week, the buddies will take a step back but there will be plenty of buddies and staff around to help guide them. They will no longer get out 5 minutes early and will have lunch at the same time as the rest of the school. We have worked with them this week to show how the lunch line operates and what to do. The whole year has made a great start to the year and the young people have been very kind and respectful. Mr F managed to get around most classes today and was very complimentary about how well the classes were working. Well done S1 and thank you to the S6 buddies for all your support!

Mrs Davidson and I visited S3 in English and Maths classes this afternoon also. Again, almost all of the young people were settled and working hard on their coursework. Uniform was looking very smart and their application was noted by their teachers. Well done S3. Next week, the Year Heads and I will continue to get around classes and check-in with our young people.

We have had many visitors to the school over the past few weeks. All have commented on how smart our young people are in their uniform and the calmness around the school. We hope to maintain this as we go forward over the session. A gentle reminder that young people should not wear hoodies in class and that jumpers should be plain black, with minimum logos if necessary. Young people shouldn’t wear any alternative colours or fashion other than normal school jumper / cardigans.

This week, all young people attended their first House assembly of the new session. At the assembly, they were introduced to the house team and given some information around Child Protection and other important messages.

For those who are new to our school and community, I would like to nudge you towards our school website. On the website, you will be able to find a huge array of information about our school including this Rector’s log, the Blue Bulletin and much more. Our School Improvement Plan, Standards and Quality Report and other policies will also be added over the term.

In addition, I have included a ‘Key Information for Parents / Carers’ document which provides a summary of key information including contacts, policies etc. I hope this is useful, especially for those new to our community or looking for information quickly.

The week ahead…

Next week, staff will be involved in the first Collegiate session of the school year. The theme for the evening will be around learning conversations, reporting and accessing our new tracking system.

For our young people, the focus will continue to be on settling back into our school routines and continuing on with their learning.

I hope you have a fab weekend.

Best wishes,

Chris McKay
