Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 09/06/23

Welcome to this weeks Rector’s Log, I hope you and your family are well.

The week that’s been…

A shorter week this week at KHS for young people, but another filled with lots of learning and success.

On Wednesday, all young people moved on to their new timetables and started their learning within new subjects. All young people also moved into new tutor classes, following a change from vertical (mixed year) tutor classes to horizontal (same year) tutor classes. We hope that this will better support all young people attend tutor, develop a common year group ethos and support a calm and productive start to the school day.

On Thursday, young people in S4-6 attended a presentation from Scottish Fire and rescue around water safety. This presentation was a timely and sobering reminder of the dangers of playing in an around various waterways where not everything is as safe as it seems.

Furthermore, we also had the finals of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Scotland on Thursday. We had 7 fantastic teams, all representing and advocating for various local charities. It was really and inspiring to hear from each group about their chosen charity and why they were passionate about championing each cause. Massive congratulations to the winners; Dasha Skoukine and Alicia Taylor who won £3000 for their chosen local charity Nourish. They will go on to present at the Scottish finals in Perth on Tuesday next week. Well done to all young people who presented too. Thanks to Mrs Morris and Mrs Whyte for their organisation and delivery of the programme.

This week we have also had the S2 first chance group attend a residential ‘Summer School’ at St Andrews University. Mr Dick and Ms Preece accompanied our young people at the event, with Mr Dick commenting on how well the group interacted and enjoyed the experience. Thank you to both members of staff for supporting our young people at this event.

Today, we have a group of S6 leaders representing KHS at an academic celebration for the tercentenary of Adam Smith. As you will be aware, Adam Smith represents one of the 3 houses here at KHS and we are honoured to join in the celebrations to mark this fantastic series of events.

The week ahead…

Next week is an extremely busy week in school with assemblies, prizegiving, P7 visits and many more events. Lots to update you with next week.

Finally, Stevensons will be in school on Thursday 15th June from 5.30pm with blazers and black jumpers / cardigans for any parent / carer that wants to get an early start on uniform for next session. Uniform is also available from BeSchoolwear, High St., Kirkcaldy.

I hope you have an enjoyable weekend

Best wishes

Chris McKay
