Kirkcaldy High School

Respect for Self, Others, and Learning

Rector’s Log 13/05/22

Dear Parent/Carer

Here is the news from KHS. I’m hoping this message finds you well.

We’ve had the latest round of SQA exams this week with Music, Design and Manufacture, English, Fashion and Textiles and Physics. I’m pleased to say that these are going to plan. Many thanks to Mrs Davidson, our SQA Coordinator, and also to Mrs Maloney our Chief Invigilator. Credit too, to Mr Broadway, who is responsible for additional exam arrangements for pupils with a specific need.

On Tuesday, Mrs Hamilton (Depute) and Mrs Hume (Head of English) were along at St Andrews High School observing lessons and discussing teaching practice with colleagues there as part of our “Learning Partnership”. We will have other Kirkcaldy based teachers do the same in KHS after the summer break.

Then, on Wednesday afternoon, it was good to catch up with most of the S6 as they were in to pick up their Yearbook. Congratulations to the Class of ’22 on putting together such a lovely record of their time in KHS, and many thanks to Mr I’Anson and Ms Czudek, who supported the pupil committee. I’m told that we expect to take delivery of leavers’ hoodies at the end of next week.

Next week’s highlights include our S1 Parent/Carer Evening online on Tuesday and then on Friday, our U15 footballers take on Inverkeithing High School in the Fife Shield Final at Bayview Stadium, Methil. Best wishes to Mr English, Mr I’Anson and all the boys. It would be a great end to the season to lift the title.

Next week’s exams are RMPS, Dance and Graphic Communication (Monday), Spanish and Classics (Tuesday), Business Management, Creative Cakes and Engineering Science (Wednesday), Biology and Human Biology (Thursday) and History on Friday.

Also, all young people in S3 will sit English reading and writing standardised assessments next week. We have been preparing young people in class and study resources have been emailed home to parents/carers.

A wee bit further ahead, and some of our S3 Maths classes will be taking an assessment in the Assembly Hall on Thursday 26 March Period 3-4 when they are normally in English or Maths. This will be a non-calculator assessment for National 5 level skills learned so far. This applies to the following S3 classes: Ms Glen (class with their double period of Maths on a Wednesday), Miss Hay, Mr Jones, Mr MacDonald (class with their double period of Maths on a Thursday) and Mrs McMahon. Classes can use their ‘Task A Revision Booklet’ and any extra materials provided by their teacher to prepare for this.

Some staffing news, and it’s very best wishes to Mrs Hunter (Maths and PT Guidance) and Mr Hunter (CDT) who are leaving KHS at the end of the month, heading north to take up new teaching challenges in Aberdeenshire. Both have been terrific assets here and will be greatly missed. I’m sure they will do well in their new school.

Finally, congratulations to the group of 70 or so S5 pupils who have applied for and been appointed to the position Prefect for next session. We are now working on the selection process for Head Boy and Girl and the Deputes. Thanks to Mrs Davidson, who is leading on this.

Have a good weekend, and thanks for all your ongoing support of KHS.
